What Is Your Comfort Level And Why It Matters

He had a stomach swirling feeling. It was an internal alarm indicating that he was out of his comfort zone. At that point, he didn’t feel overly exasperated. Nevertheless, he knew he had to control his level of discomfort. He knew such feelings matters to one’s emotional wellbeing.

Are you aware of when your state of comfort is challenged – when your levels of uneasiness begin to alter your perspective and behavior? You should – those are the points at which you might begin to engage in negative behavior. And that’s why it matters.

The following are thoughts to consider to improve your comfort level and enhance your mental wellbeing. You’ll also uncover insights about your thought process. That will allow you to discover more about what matters to you and why.

 

Importance of Comfort:

Comfort, it’s something you constantly seek but don’t think a lot about until you become uncomfortable. You should note it more frequently. Because when it’s altered, your stability and wellbeing can become mired in self-emotional conflict. That can make you feel awkward in some environments. Not only should you know your level and degree of comfort, but you should also know what triggers it to go up or down. That insight allows you to gain greater control of yourself and the environments you’re in.

Going forward, note your emotional change based on your environments. Seek to understand why you feel more comfortable in some situations versus others. Before entering those that might cause you to experience discomfort, think about how you might obtain greater control of yourself and the environment. Look for common variables that you can use to become emboldened to assist in your assessment. By doing that, you’ll become empowered and gain an insightful introspection about yourself. Past Occurrences:

In considering your state of comfort, consider your current state of mind. Ask yourself why you have such feelings – what caused them – and what you might be associating from past occurrences that may be shadowing your perception. If you’re conflating past occurrences, especially if they’re negative, realize that you might be placing too much emphasis on the past. Separate the occurrence. Assess whether it causes the degree of angst as before the separation. You will have begun to control past triggers that might negatively sway your perspective. Doing that should allow you to become more at ease.

 

Controlling Your Mind Controls The Environment:

Before entering an environment, you have expectations about what might occur – how you might feel and what you might do. If it’s a new environment, you might experience a higher degree of angst than those that you’re more familiar with. Regardless of your emotional state, reassure yourself that more than likely you’ll live through the situation that you’ll find yourself in. Thus, there’s nothing worse than death that’ll occur to you.

Anything other than that is okay. So, assuage your mind – focus on the fact that you’ll learn something from being in that surrounding. By thinking like that, you’ll relieve the pressure from overthinking what might occur and how you’ll fair. That should allow you to mentally perceive yourself as flowing freer in the environment. You’re going to be a rock star … and everything will be right with the world.

 

What does this have to do with negotiations?

The negotiation process is about comfort and discomfort. When a negotiator feels comfortable about an offer or concession, he’s more likely to continue upon the same path. Conversely, one can use pain and discomfort as a tool to motivate the opposing negotiator to alter the path he’s on. Thus, the tool of comfort and how it’s used during a negotiation is something that you should give with great consideration. If you overlook it, you overlook an ally that you can use to advantage your negotiation position. Smart negotiators don’t waste this tool. Are you a smart negotiator?

Dear Katherine: My Kids Love Video Games—Should I Be Concerned?

Dear Katherine,

My kids love playing video games. They seem to take genuine pleasure in this activity, and while they’re occupied, I have a chance to do household chores and enjoy a little time to myself. 

I know there are better hobbies out there—but if they like gaming and it gives me a bit of space, is that so wrong? Am I making a parenting mistake by letting them play?

Hey there, Guilty As Charged,

First of all, you have nothing to feel guilty about here! Check your shame at the door. We’re all human.

Gaming—and screen-time in general—is a sore spot in many parent-child relationships. It’s hard to imagine eliminating these activities because, as you said, your kids enjoy playing video games, and you enjoy having some space. Not to mention that screen-time has become an undeniable part of children’s social lives.

But of course, “too much” of anything can be a problem.

So what constitutes “too much” in terms of gaming? The answer: It depends. 

Rest assured that you probably don’t have to put an end to your kids’ gaming. This kind of hobby can have a place in a healthy, well-rounded child’s life. The issue is when it becomes an addiction.

I did a webinar with Cam Adair (founder of Game Quitters, the world’s largest support platform), who once struggled with video game addiction. He dropped out of school, lied to his parents about having a job, and eventually experienced suicidal ideation. At the height of his problem, he was gaming 16 hours a day.
We talked about how one of the risk factors for full-fledged gaming addiction is using video games as a coping mechanism or a means of escape. The amount of time someone spends gaming matters much less than why they’re gaming in the first place.

Here’s a good litmus test: If your child is gaming and you ask them to stop—for dinner, homework, or something else—are they capable of easily walking away? If so, there may not be cause for concern.

If they have trouble walking away, there may not be cause for concern either.  If they are in the middle of getting to that next level at the very moment you call for them, they may just need a few more minutes!

It’s also important to take a holistic view of your kids’ lives outside of gaming.

Are they doing well in school? 

Do they have nice friends? 

Are they generally kind and happy? 

Do they get proper exercise and nutrition?

The answers to those questions will help you determine if playing video games is a solution for another problem—or just another activity that brings your children joy.

If you are concerned, Game Quitters—Cam’s game addiction support community—is an excellent resource. But first, start a conversation with your kids about their gaming habits. Good old-fashioned quality time and better parent-child communication may be enough to keep them from entering unhealthy territory.

Tell your child that you want to spend time together as a family, and be sure to plan activities that excite them. Steer clear of using power and control because that is guaranteed to activate the 3Rs (retaliation, rebellion and resistance) and generate a resentment flow.

The Great Reinvention

Last year, the buzz phrase ‘The Great Resignation’ filled our hearts and minds with negativity and doom – women left the workforce in droves in search of more balance and fulfillment.  This trend begs the question: what is so terrible about women reimaging their careers and following their dreams?  There’s a two-fold opportunity here for both employees and companies.  Employees have an opportunity to find a role and/or career they love, and companies have an opportunity to fill roles with the right, qualified candidate motivated for the position.  Sure, the pandemic has placed added constraints and stress on our lives, but what better time to shift from a surviving to thriving mode, especially with your career.  Our careers do not define us, but our level of happiness does.  This year let’s give that negative phrase a 180 degree turn and coin it ‘The Great Reinvention,’ a time for reflection and action.

 

The Great Reinvention centers around you, prioritizing what matters most and makes your heart sing with respect to your career.  It’s time to start prioritizing YOUR goals, aspirations, and what makes you truly happy.  If you’re happy with what you are doing for a living, then it’s not considered ‘work.’  Companies all want to be profitable and if their employees enjoy what they are doing and feel appreciated, naturally an increase in productivity occurs.  And if employees are happy and feel valued, their chances of burnout decreases.

 

New year, new you.  Time for a mindset shift and there is no better time than now to take calculated risks in your career to reinvent your professional life.  Why? Because tomorrow is not promised to us.  Therefore, we should embrace the past and use the present as a compass to guide us today in a way that sets us up for our future – and for our legacy.

 

We all seek tangible tools we can place in our toolboxes and apply to our lives as we troubleshoot, learn, and grow.  Here are a few tips to empower you to start blueprinting your career reinvention today:

–        Conduct a mapping exercise with your goals clearly stated to define WHAT you need to accomplish to get there

–        List the HOWs with respect to how you will achieve your dreams.  Will you further your education, get certified, be proactive by calendaring time in the evenings and weekends to research, network, etc.?

–     Create a timeline as to WHEN you will begin to take your calculated risk and forge ahead.

–        Make a list of WHO will be in your trusted circle to get you from point A to point B.  This is a combination of finding a sponsor within your company or desired company to help shepherd you to your dream job, to hiring a business coach, to finding a couple of relevant mentors.

–        Identify the fears, mindsets and beliefs that intimidate you and may be holding you back from following your career aspirations in this next chapter.  Get support to address if you need it!
