How To 10X Your ROI From Any Council Or Membership: Create Value. Strengthen Relationships. Drive Results

By Kathleen Caldwell

Founder, THE Category Of One™, THE Category Of One System™ and C-SUITE NETWORK™ Women’s Coaching & Consulting Council™

There was something different on June 7, 2015. I remember walking into my first C-SUITE NETWORK conference in Chicago and immediately feeling it. The room was different.

There was an energy of people genuinely connecting. This wasn’t a room of vendors pitching each other. What stood out most was the vibe; curiosity, engagement, and even fun.

The attendees were accomplished, intelligent professionals who you genuinely wanted to know. Not just as contacts, but as colleagues, collaborators, and even lifelong friends.

In that moment, I realized something important: This was the kind of environment and culture I not only wanted to invest in and be part of, but one I wanted to create for myself—and for others.

The Top Third Think and Engage Differently

Years later, I’ve seen a consistent pattern across councils, networks, associations and memberships. That realization stayed with me and over time, it revealed something even more important about how people show up and engage.

As Jeffrey Hayzlett, Chairman of C-SUITE NETWORK™ often shares, most memberships naturally divide into thirds: one-third of members show up consistently and engage, one-third participate occasionally, and one-third barely show up at all.

What is rarely discussed, however, is that the top third are not simply more active. They are operating from a completely different mindset—and playing an entirely different, elevated game. They understand how to create value inside the room, not just show up.

Councils Are Not Leads Groups. They Are Strategic Communities

Councils are not designed for members to sell to each other or exchange “leads.” They are environments where peers and partners connect through shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to growth.

Opportunity is not created by simply being in the room. It is created through alignment, collaboration, and the relationships that are built over time.

The Council ROI Ecosystem

Councils within C-SUITE NETWORK are guided by four powerful principles: Relevancy. Reach. Respect. Reciprocity.

These principles form the foundation of a high-functioning peer ecosystem. However, participation alone does not produce meaningful business results.

ROI is created through the ability to generate and contribute value in ways that are relevant, trusted, and aligned with the needs of others.

The Quadruple Win™

Some members ask, “What can I get from this mastermind or council?”

High-level professionals ask, “What can I create and give that expands opportunity for everyone involved?”

A true council and network is not about taking. It’s about giving that expands in four directions:

·       You win through growth, positioning, and results

·       Your council colleagues win through expanded opportunity and reach

·       Clients and stakeholders win through meaningful outcomes

·       The entire ecosystem wins through stronger, more valuable connections

When value is created in all directions, the return multiplies. The next step is activating this in how individuals show up, connect, and contribute.

How To Activate ROI Immediately: Use The GIVE. ASK. ASK. ACTION. Model™

Understanding this model is one thing. Activating it is where ROI is created and realized This is how you turn conversations into relationships—and relationships into meaningful opportunity.

GIVE (Lead With Value First)

Start by contributing. Not to impress, but to be useful. This can look like making a thoughtful introduction, sharing an idea or perspective, offering a relevant resource, or providing insight and genuine counsel that moves someone forward.

When value is given first, credibility is built, trust is established, and reciprocity is activated.

This is where partnerships begin.

ASK (YOUR COLLEAGUES — Get Curious and Intentional)

Shift the focus to the other person. Ask questions that matter:

“Where are you looking to grow right now?” “What opportunities are most important to you?” “What challenges are you navigating?” “Who would be a valuable connection for you?”

Listen carefully. Listen to understand, not to respond. When this is done well, relationships deepen, relevance increases, and you are experienced as someone who genuinely cares.

ASK (FOR YOURSELF — Be Clear and Specific)

This is where many people hold back and miss opportunity. Be clear about what is needed, and ask.

“I’m currently looking to connect with…” “I’d value introductions to…” “I’m expanding into…” “I’m building…”

Clarity creates alignment.

Because if people don’t know how to support you, they can’t.

ACTION (Move It Forward)

This is where most conversations stop and where real opportunity begins. Before the conversation ends, take a clear next step. Make the introduction. Send the resource. Schedule the follow-up. Capture the idea and act on it promptly.

Even small actions create momentum. Because without action, there is no movement. And without movement, there are no results.

Why The GIVE. ASK. ASK. ACTION. Model™ Works

When individuals consistently give value, ask with intention, communicate clearly, and follow through with action, they create a rhythm that builds trust, expands visibility, opens opportunity, and drives results.

This is how conversations turn into relationships—and relationships turn into ROI.

How You Show Up Matters

As Sheila A. Anderson, founder, Image Power Play and C-SUITE NETWORK™ Women’s Coaching & Consulting Council esteemed faculty partner says, “Everything communicates.” Your presence communicates. Your attention communicates. Your level of engagement communicates.

Council gatherings are your boardroom. This is not the time to multitask—it is intentional focus time that deserves your full presence and attention.

When your attention is divided; whether checking email or taking another phone call, your presence is diluted—and people can see and feel that. And when that happens, trust erodes and relationships suffer.

Genuinely Care—Because “Life Is In Session”

Human connection matters. People may not remember everything you say, but they will remember how you made them feel.

Take the time to truly see and understand your colleagues in the council, community, network—their goals, their challenges, and what matters to them.

Because when people feel seen, heard, and valued, relationships deepen—and that is where real opportunity begins.

And remember—life is in session.

We are more than our businesses. Everyone is navigating something—personally, professionally, or both.

Lead with compassion. Be patient. Grant grace—to others and to yourself.

Strong communities are built not just on performance, but on understanding and true human connection.

People Join Councils And Networks For Different Reasons

People come into councils and communities for different reasons: Growth. Learning. Connection. Affiliation. Prestige. Opportunity. Challenge. Validation.

Each person is seeking something meaningful to them. Take the time to understand that—and respect it.

Because not everyone defines value the same way.

ROI Is Not Only Measured In Revenue

ROI is not only measured in revenue. It is also experienced through access, new perspectives, renewed confidence, and expanded thinking—factors that often create the greatest long-term value.

For some, the return is immediate. For others, it builds over time. Both matter.

When you understand what others value, you are better positioned to create value that truly resonates—and that is what ultimately drives meaningful results.

Final Thoughts

Value creates opportunity. Relationships carry it forward. Results follow.

In a peer council, ROI is not about what you get. It is about the value you create and give—and the relationships through which it flows.
