Is there value in blogging or it is old school? Is it really worth the time it takes?

It is a commitment to start and continue a blog. I hesitated in 2009 when I sat down to write my first blog post. I knew I was deciding to continue blogging. Michael Jackson had just died of a drug overdose and it was not immediately clear what drug was the culprit. I wrote my first blog post about him. Since that first post, I’ve written thousands more – for attorneys, patients, legal nurse consultants, and writers. You’ll find my writing tips blog at patiyer.com.

Too many people think of a blog as an extended advertisement. That’s exactly what it’s not. A blog helps you form a relationship with your readers and build trust by providing a resource that will help them. A blog is not all about you; it’s all about them.

A blog is about selling, but in order to gain and maintain your readers’ trust, it must be the softest selling imaginable. Figure out who your readers are and what concerns them. Write about subjects that interest and entertain them. When you talk about your services, make that an organic part of a larger subject.

Two types of books are very good for people who like to do research. I’m not talking here about exhaustive, years-long research, especially for the first category, which I’m generally calling the “101 Tips” kind of book.

You’ve seen them in the form of books about folk remedies, home repair guides, and many more. If you choose a subject that’s right both for you as a writer and for an identifiable target audience, you can have success.

The “All About” books set out a defined area and include in-depth information on that subject. You could write “All About Customer Service”.

The “All About” books require more care in structuring. A detailed outline is essential. It also requires greater writing skill and should include interesting anecdotes and little-known facts.

Many people who feel an urge to write falter when it comes to choosing subject matter. They may think that if a subject doesn’t immediately come to mind, they must not really be writers.

I’m Pat Iyer and this is Writing to Get Business.

I suggest you think of yourself as someone with talent and desire who seeks an outlet. One way to channel it is to write on a “hot topic,” not a topic that will fade away when the next crisis emerges, but a subject that has longevity, such as the problems of marketing, customer service, leadership and communication.

By searching on amazon.com and platforms, you can learn not only what’s popular but where there are openings for new books on hot topics.

A related problem writers encounter centers on the advice, “Write what you know about.” It helps to get specific. Through keeping a journal, you can discover what about your life experiences can contribute to a book. If, to take the example of marketing, you have experience with the subject, that belongs in your book. Such a book will have much more appeal to readers than one that is dry and statistical.

• ·       A “hot topic” is really a subject of widespread and enduring interest.
• ·       Amazon is a good source for finding hot topics.
• ·       Check out the cultural and social sections of news sources.
• ·       Asking yourself why you want to write a book can help you come up with topics.
• ·       Get as specific as you can in terms of your topic.

If you are nervous about going it alone in writing a book, this podcast can alleviate your fears. You’ll learn that several alternatives exist to the solo route. You can work with contributors, have a coeditor, be a chief editor with associate editors, or be one of those associate editors. I have experience with all these roles and will share the challenges and rewards of these options.

This is the first of 4 shows devoted to publishing. A lot of would-be authors talk with me about their desire to write a book. There’s a big difference between desire and drive, and nowhere is it clearer than about writing a book. Desire makes you dream; drive makes you do.
