You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Location, location, location” in reference to buying or renting real estate. The concept of location also applies to an article or book. The prime real estate is the headline and the line that follows it.

I know you are familiar with reading advertising copy – it is all around you. If you write copy for your business or another entity, think about how readers react to what you write: Most readers will decide to read something based on the title. Avoid being bland and boring, and the pitfall of writing something that doesn’t represent the content. There’s no better way to annoy and alienate a reader.

While I devote this podcast primarily to writing in an article format, you can use this concept for any kind of writing. In a book, that would be the title and the subtitle.

Because often the reader sees both the title and the subtitle (or title and first line of the article), you want them both to be compelling. The suggestions in this podcast will help you to attract readers.

The best way to find out is to see what other people in your area of expertise write. You aren’t going to do a copy-cat version. Lists are an important element of nonfiction books. While in fiction, the combination of dialogue and narrative both vary the pace and break up the monotony of large blocks of type, this kind of interruption is much more important in non-fiction, where you don’t have the excitement and drama of a story to carry you through.

The best listicles either serve as springboards for more detailed information or make the reader think. I’ll describe how to do this.

One of the biggest ideas that stops people from writing is that it’s hard work. I’ve mentioned before in this podcast how greatly our school experiences have conditioned us into a lot of negative beliefs about writing. This is one of those beliefs.

A belief isn’t necessarily a truth. We make beliefs based on what we experienced, and you may have found writing difficult in school. Maybe the assigned subjects bored you. Maybe you got confused about outlines and footnotes.

Two of the biggest mistakes new writers make with first drafts are:

They forget that this is A FIRST DRAFT. You can make mistakes, ignore correct spelling. Get those words down.

They also slow themselves down by tormenting themselves for not spending enough hours writing.
