It Can’t Be “Extra” If It’s Actual Size

On audacity, compression, and what happens when truth stops adjusting

When people talk about attitude, they often mean mood.

Positive. Confident. Motivated.

That’s not what I mean.

Sometimes attitude looks like audacity.

And audacity, especially when it shows up without warning, tends to get labeled as extra.

Not because it’s inaccurate. Because it hasn’t been negotiated.

Audacity isn’t recklessness. It’s truth delivered at full size.

No padding. No preamble. No softening to manage how it might land.

That’s why it stands out.

Most experienced people are very good at compression. They know how to scale themselves to the room. How to read expectations. How to make their clarity palatable.

Those are real skills. And they’re usually learned honestly.

The problem is what happens when you stop using them by default.

Actual size creates contrast.

What used to feel clear now feels strong. What used to feel confident now feels bold. What once passed quietly now feels like a lot.

Nothing about the message changed. Only the adjustment did.

So audacity gets misread.

The room was calibrated to a smaller signal.

Instead of saying, “You’re operating at full size now,” people reach for language that explains the discomfort.

“That’s intense.” “That’s a bit much.” “That’s… extra.”

What they usually mean is: this no longer fits the version of you we were used to.

That’s not a critique of accuracy. It’s a response to scale.

Even before the lights turn on in 2026, I am stepping into my actual size. This doesn’t mean I’m louder or a bigger “presence” – I mean, I did standup for a decade, I host two podcasts, I’m an author, I speak. In my case, it means I move a bit slower, more deliberately, and more at ease with my strength. More in sync with myself, if you will.

Your actual size may be a bit outside your comfort zone.

Actual size doesn’t ask permission before it shows up. It doesn’t announce itself. And it doesn’t wait for outcomes to justify it.

That’s why it feels risky.

Not because it’s wrong — but because it removes the buffer between what you see and what you say.

Audacity, in this sense, isn’t a personality trait.

It’s what clarity looks like when it stops apologizing.

And the question becomes simpler than it sounds:

Are you willing to be seen at the size this truth actually requires?
