The sitting Director of Membership for the Midwest Country Music Organization Nikki Muhlbauer joined The Scene for a chat. She did an amazing job planning and executing the MCMO Awards Show this year and will perform admirably in her new role. We talked about the direction of the org and where we go from here. Plans for next years award show taking place on April 12, 2025 at the Rooftop Garden Ballroom in Arnold’s Park, IA.

We are celebrating the announcement of The Scene Projects Songwriter Showcase Festival happening May 24 & 25, 2025 at Katmandu Campground in Sturgis, South Dakota. This episode was our first ever showcase event on the property with Haven Rae August 2024 during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. 

Haven is a talented young songwriter from northeast South Dakota. We got to know the twenty something singer while we were all camped out with our friends at Katmandu Campground. She’s a special talent and you will be seeing and hearing a lot more from her on The Scene. 

Blake Rave took a night before continuing his international tour in the United Kingdom to sit with us in Sioux Falls and share his songs with us. I really appreciated getting to know Blake and truly enjoyed his songs. 

This was our first video episode of the Songwriter Showcase filmed at The Den in Sioux Falls, SD. We are thrilled to be bringing the video footage to our YouTube channel every week.

Gabriel Michael, the lead singer/guitarist for one of our favorite bands in South Dakota Funk-UH-Fried, joined Tasha Husaboe for the Songwriter Showcase. 

Gabriel is a smooth singing, wise cracking powerhouse of a musician whose talent is only exceeded by his personality. You get to hear plenty of it in the episode and in his original material. 

He can be found fronting Funk-UH-Fried with friend of the show Chris Garcia all over the greater Sioux Falls area and Im sure they will be making a lot of noise across the midwest next summer.

 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and The Scene Project is shining a spotlight on one of our own—Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter and MCMO member, Katy Tessman. 

Katy has a powerful story to share. Diagnosed with breast cancer at just 39, she bravely underwent a double mastectomy on her 40th birthday and has been cancer-free ever since. In 2013 she published a book for children about breast cancer and in 2022, she started sharing her original music through outreach events: https://www.katytessman.com/outreach.html Stories and songs truly heal and her aim is to evoke laughter and tears, spread smiles, while fostering a sense of hope and togetherness.

She’s celebrating the incredible 15-year cancer free milestone with a special show at Icehouse in Minneapolis on Friday, October 18, alongside the talented Laura Hugo, raising funds for Gilda’s Club – MN, a place that offers support to those navigating the cancer journey. 

Last October, Katy released her album Fly, which received a starred review in RnR Magazine, calling it “a quietly inspiring pleasure.” Her music is all about celebrating life’s triumphs and challenges—just like her journey through breast cancer.

Let’s come together, share this event far and wide, and support a truly wonderful cause. This night is sure to uplift spirits and bring a warmth that goes beyond words!
