• Why does fun work?
• When you do an activity that’s fun, it feels good and it is intrinsically rewarding.
• It has a positive effect on motivation levels.
• It has a longer lasting effect. You want to do it again. In a way, it’s addictive.
• Learning requires repetition
• Maintain Fun – Variety and Surprise. Novelty breads engagement. Need to constantly switch it up. Try lots of little things.
• Why are we talking about this?
• Scare tactics drive bad behavior underground.
• John Cleese – humor is the easiest way to get people from the closed to the open mode.
• Need to get people to talk about these important issues – create a social environment where people are more likely to speak up.

• Stretching you compliance messaging by using tactics for reaching more employees. -Using internal social media sites like Chatter, Yammer, Jive, Workplace to reach employees in new ways. These are used by other departments to connect groups. Why doesn’t the compliance function use them as well?
• This is another channel outside of an LMS push to reach more people
• These channels work like social media. The key is that you need to present something interesting for people to choose to access. Many have #hashtags and are interactive
• Post interesting videos
• Post interesting Graphics & GIFs
• Post contests
• Ask for feedback
• This is a way to increase visibility and promote your main messaging
• Compliance is here to help advice and coach
• Speak Up Culture
• Here is where you go for more info
• Ethics and Compliance needs more visibility – so increase access through these channels. And if you want to use these channels, it should be interesting or fun or you won’t get access.

In this show, we discuss how improvisation can be supportive to ethics and compliance programs by helping internal and external communications and driving a culture of compliance throughout an organization.

• Improv is not simply comedy. It’s a skill that improvisers use to make comedy on stage. This skill has application to the ethics and compliance professionals, from leadership teams and to all employees.
• You can think of it as Applied Improvisation. Applied Improvisation is “yoga for your communication skills”.
• While we cannot teach you to be funny, Improv techniques can teach you
• How to be better listeners;
• How to increase awareness;
• How to make connections and build rapport and trust;
• How to be more adaptable and agile; and
• How to diffuse emotional situations.
• Improv techniques can help ethics, compliance and legal teams to be less scary and better listeners.
• Improv techniques can be seen as leadership development skills as its reframing conversations and discussions with senior management to help create a system of trust and support.
• Improv techniques can help build a better culture through encouraging respectful disagreement, being more open minded about challenging assumption, assuming positive intent, validating and building bridge to commonality and helping foster active listening.
• The bottom line is the improv techniques can help give employees skills and tools that will help them challenge business decisions respectfully and to encourage them to stop disrespectful behavior when they encounter it.

§  Have Managers lead compliance related discussions; you can create toolkits for them with talking points. 

§  Have senior management discuss an ethical dilemma they faced and how they resolved it.

§  Use real world examples to stress your company’s values. 

§  Any initiatives you begin must be followed up throughout the year.

• How about a nationally or even internationally famous Keynote Speaker around business ethics?
• Someone from outside your organization might well have more credibility on overall ethics. 
• The speakers should give your employees pause to think more about business ethics and compliance.

§  Why not try a scavenger hunt through your compliance policies and procedures? You can put some fun easter eggs in different parts of the Code and have them look for it and report back. This would teach employees where to go to find out information relevant to compliance. 

§  What about prizes for employees?

§  Some of the types of contests include a Lip Sync Contest and Two Truths & a Lie contest. 

§  All of this should be designed to allow your employees to get to know your compliance team.

§  Finally it can be dialogues or monologues.

The program is entitled the BMO-On-The-Street With Actions Matterly a custom man-on-the-street-style integrity and Speak Up communications campaign, where real employees to championed the cause of compliance. It is the fascinating picture of how a traditionally conservative financial institution recognized the value of trying a more entertaining approach to ensure that employees pay attention to this important subject. They were rewarded by being the only Canadian bank to be recognized as a Worlds Most Ethical Company.

 Some of the highlights include:What is the BMO-On-The-Street With Actions Matterly? It is man-on-street style videos, interviewing employees and getting them to champion the cause.

o  It was named after the BMO theme that Words and Actions Matter.

o BMO wanted to be able to tackle the tough subjects.

Why did BMO take this approach?o We wanted to involve employee?

o We wanted it to be fun and interesting because this can be a tough subject to get at.Was BMO worried about using entertainment and humor and how did you handle that?o We were careful to make sure that we never made fun of the issue. We made the character interesting/quirky allowing employees to be the heroes of the piece.What was it about the campaign that made it such a success?What have been the results, both expected and unexpected?What advice would you give to others thinking about trying something creative like this…what lessons have you learned?Resources:
