• To create a Speak Up / Listen Up culture, involving leadership is key. Being entertaining and creative helps to extend your influence.
• Providing leadership with simple, short and entertaining training and communication content makes it more likely that they’ll carry these important messages forward.
• Utilize leaders in training and communications content. Have them tell stories about integrity. Utilize them in talk shows and podcasts. Give them simple tag lines to repeat. Make it simple and fun!
• Provide training and resources for your leaders so they are more prepared to support their teams when employees do Speak Up. Improv training is a fun way to involve them and give them practical skills.

·       This  project was a continuation of a prior campaign, utilizing the Actions Matterly character.

·       Who is Actions Matterly?

·       Actions Matterly focused on Risks While Working from Home, which is a challenging environment for everyone.

·       Lots of privacy and confidentiality issues.

·       Lots of ethical issues – particularly because people are isolated at home and perhaps feel like these they can’t be seen.

·       How was the campaign was rolled out?

o   Photos shared on BMO Intranet Site

o   Followed by Video

o   Repeated for 6 weeks

The Problem

• People are disconnected – lose connection and trust
• One of the main influences on behavior is peer pressure/group think. If you lose connection with colleagues, it’s easy to start thinking “everybody’s doing it” kind of thing.
• It’s easy to think that leadership doesn’t care
• They may feel invisible, i.e., no one will know about their bad behavior.
• It’s hard to get airtime on comms channels

People are multitasking more than ever

• There are also new risks – privacy, gifts, etc.
• It’s sometimes harder to do the right thing. Resources are not as readily available.

Creative Comms Can Help

• Need to find ways to increase your visibility
• Short commercials advertising resources – doesn’t take a lot of time.
• Provide to leaders to play prior to zoom meetings
• Embed on intranet and newsletters
• Embed in other departments trainings and newsletter
• Commercial
• Integrity Themed Talk Shows – showing your people talking about the issues and challenges…but not a talking head video
• Needs to be interesting to stand out and needs to be interesting so others will carry the message on your behalf

• Pat and Ronnie worked on a project that ended up being called, “Tales from the Hotline”. It encompassed some of the following:
• Real stories about workplace behavior submitted from a group of E&C professionals. 
• Uses a storytelling style, allowing you cover a lot of ground.
• Addresses a variety of risk areas. 
• There is a running speak up/raising concerns theme highlighting all the different speak up channels that were used and were not used.
• Positions the E&C team as helpful advisors and coaches.
• Even though the stories are serious, the storytellers are interesting and playful, making them engaging.
• They are like short case studies.
• What were the lessons learned by Pat from the project?
• What advice would she give others who want to try something more creative?
