As a Certified Behavior Analyst, I’ve spent years listening, not just to what people say, but to what their words reveal about how they think.
Successful speakers use language that creates opportunity.
Struggling speakers often use language that creates limitation.
I’ve noticed four phrases that show up repeatedly in conversations with speakers, coaches, and entrepreneurs.
Too Little. Too Late. Too Much. Never Enough.
They sound harmless.
They’re anything but.
These four phrases quietly shape the decisions that determine whether you’ll build a thriving speaking business, or remain stuck wondering why everyone else seems to be getting booked.
Too Little
“I only have a small audience.”
“I’ve only spoken a few times.”
“My story isn’t big enough.”
“My social media following is too small.”
Stop measuring your value by numbers.
Event planners aren’t looking for a speaker with the biggest audience. They’re looking for a speaker who can create the biggest transformation for theiraudience.
Your impact has never been measured by your follower count.
Too Late
“I’m too old to start speaking.”
“The market is too crowded.”
“I should have started years ago.”
“AI is changing everything.”
Here’s the reality.
Someone is getting booked today.
Someone is launching their speaking career today.
Someone is raising their speaking fee today.
Why shouldn’t that someone be you?
The best time to start was years ago.
The second-best time is today.
Too Much
“I’m too outspoken.”
“I’m too energetic.”
“I’m too passionate.”
“My personality is too strong.”
I’ve built a career on something many people told me to tone down.
The qualities you’ve been trying to hide are often the very reasons audiences remember you.
Your authenticity is your greatest differentiator.
Don’t become forgettable trying to become acceptable.
Never Enough
This one is the most dangerous because it never lets you arrive.
“I need one more certification.”
“I need a better website.”
“I need another testimonial.”
“I need more experience.”
“I need another year.”
Perfection has become the world’s most socially acceptable excuse for procrastination.
If you keep waiting until you feel “ready,” you’ll spend your life watching less qualified people stand on stages that should have been yours.
After 29 years as a full-time paid professional speaker, here’s what I know for certain:
Success doesn’t belong to the person with the perfect résumé.
It belongs to the person who takes consistent action despite imperfect circumstances.
Your audience isn’t looking for perfection.
They’re looking for someone who understands their challenges and can help them solve a problem.
That person could be you.
So, the next time you catch yourself saying Too Little, Too Late, Too Much, or Never Enough, stop for a moment.
Ask yourself one simple question:
“Is this the truth… or is this the story I’ve been telling myself?”
Because the stories you repeat become the life you create.
If you’re ready to stop letting limiting language shape your speaking career, I’d love to help.
