Over four episodes each month on The Compliance Life, I visit with one current or former CCO to explore their journey to the CCO chair. This month, my guest is Wendy Badger, CCO at Tennant Company.

Wendy further elaborated on her non-traditional career path, where she found sometimes you must change your career ladder to advance your career. From the trade association, she went in-house with an accounts receivable management organization. She was the first and only lawyer on staff. The work provided both challenges and opportunities in the role. From there she decided to move into private practice, found out how it was different from in-house roles and ultimately decided to move back in-house.

Wendy knew she wanted to be a lawyer long before she went to law school. She was the first person in her family to graduate from college and then obtain an advanced degree.  She talked about some of the challenges she faced and the support and mentorship she received. We then discussed her early legal career – immediate jump to compliance in the early 2000s through a very non-traditional path of joining an international trade association where she found passion for and niche in compliance.

Melican discussed his decision to join Exiger. He talked about how his time as a CCO and his roles in AML compliance help him as a consultant. He talked about the changing role of the CCO and the compliance function and the increased use of data and tech solutions. We ended by looking down the road to where a CCO position will be in 2025 and beyond.

Melican moved into the CCO chairs at AMEX travel. He said a key lesson was that being a CCO was leading through orchestration not simply execution. A key was working with others in the business unit to educate them on how compliance changes were made but why they benefited AMEX Travel. He discussed some of his top challenges that he faced and how he and his compliance team overcame them through collaboration.

Melican moved to the corporate world starting at the New York Stock Exchange and then into the financial services world at Bearn Sterns where he was a Managing Director/Principal for three years. It was at Bearn Sterns he began his career in AML work and in compliance. From Bearn Sterns he went to American Express. He talked about moving from a financial services firm to one of the largest multi-national companies in the travel and financial transactions business.

Melican attend Colgate for undergrad and the University of Albany for law school. He began with the New York County District Attorney’s office. There he moved from Trial Division, to the 

Investigations Division, Special Prosecutions Bureau and ending with the Investigations Division, Frauds Bureau. He talked about trying cases and some large white-collar prosecutions he played a role in during his time with the DA.

In September 2017, Nordrum joined Deluxe in Investigations and as a Risk Consultant. In March 2019, she moved to Regulatory Counsel and into the CCO Chair. As Nordrum says, she “ it feels like “home” to be in a job I love doing something that challenges and excites me EVERY DAMN DAY”. She owns the full corporate compliance, ethics, and privacy programs; insurance and risk management, commercial litigation, IP, and the commercial contracting function. Back in MN, Nordrum opened her own practice focusing on animal rights, where she saved a bunch of horses and cows from starving. She next worked at Thompson Reuters, working on WestLaw. From there she went to SCCE, where she found her true calling, compliance. At SCCE, Nordrum helped pioneer many initiatives such as the conference the social media lounge/booth/wall, she founded the SCCE blog and the SCCE podcast. She became an expert in social media and compliance. One of her great joys was working with Adam Turteltaub and flying literally around the world evangelizing compliance.

This month, my guest is Kortney Nordrum, Regulatory Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Deluxe. In this Part 2, she talks about her move to DC with her now hubby, where Nordrum worked for Freddie Mac Technology Consultant on the team that reverse engineered the software at Freddie Mac to be SOX compliant. In this role, Nordrum learned the basics of SOX requirements. She then went to law school and studied abroad in Israel at Bar Ilan University. In law school she became interested in Animal Law and decided she wanted to be an animal lawyer. She left MN to head to NYC and Big Law, quickly realizing it did not fit with who she is, so she moved back to MN.
