Gartner defines the future of sales as the permanent transformation of organizations’ sales strategies, processes and allocation of resources, moving from a seller-centric to a buyer-centric orientation and shifting to hyper-automated, digital-first engagement with customers. To meet customers’ new buying preferences and succeed at virtual selling, sales leaders must adopt a totally different mindset.

B2B sales reps need to embrace new tools and channels as well as a new manner of engaging customers, matching their sales activity to their customers’ buying practices and information-collecting needs. Microaggression is a term used for brief and commonplace verbal, behavioral or environmental slights, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative attitudes toward stigmatized or culturally marginalized groups. To be clear, the “micro” in microaggression doesn’t mean that these acts can’t have big, life-changing impacts. They can, which is all the more reason to address them when you see them.

These everyday, subtle, intentional — and oftentimes unintentional — interactions or behaviors communicate some sort of bias toward historically marginalized groups. These are the thinly veiled, everyday instances of racism, homophobia, sexism (and more) that you see in the world. Sometimes it’s an insult, other times it’s an errant comment or gesture.

The difference between microaggressions and overt discrimination or macroaggressions, is that people who commit microagressions might not even be aware of them.

We’re all human beings who are prone to mistakes. But you need to be more aware of your biases and impact on people. Research has shown that microaggressions, although they’re seemingly small and sometimes innocent offenses, can take a real psychological toll on the mental health of their recipients. This toll can lead to anger and depression and can even lower work productivity and problem-solving abilities.

Setting good personal boundaries is critical to creating healthy relationships, increasing self- esteem and reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Strong boundaries protect your self- esteem and your identity as an individual with the right to make your own choices. Conversely, a lack of boundaries opens the door for others to determine your thoughts, feelings, and needs.

Unhealthy boundaries are often characterized by a weak sense of your own identity and your own feelings of disempowerment in decision making in your own life. This leads to relying on others for happiness and decision-making responsibilities, thereby losing important parts of your own identity. An inability to set boundaries also stems from fear; fear of abandonment or losing the relationship, fear of being judged or fear of hurting others feelings.

As important as it is to set healthy boundaries, most of us have a difficult time setting healthy boundaries consistently. At times it is difficult to identify when our boundaries are being crossed. We may even fear the consequences to our relationships if we set them.

As leaders, we may know the things we need to do to set boundaries, but with the pandemic and the blurred lines of work/home, often, we aren’t living those boundaries. By modeling boundaries, as a leader, you are giving your team permission to do the same. Good boundaries are a sign of emotional health, self-respect and strength.

To these individuals, obtaining anything less than perfect or even an average performance is considered a failure or not good enough.

Perfectionism is not the healthy pursuit of excellence, as most people tend to believe, but rather it is the compulsive striving toward unrealistic goals. Setting high personal standards and goals, and working hard to attain them is appropriate; but, perfectionists set excessively unrealistic goals and strive compulsively to achieve them, punishing themselves for mistakes and lowering their self-confidence because they can’t reach these impossibly high goals. When leaders seek perfection, they place a high degree of pressure on themselves that increases their anxiety, which almost certainly affects their overall performance.

The good news is there is a way back to joy and satisfaction. It is absolutely possible to shift from perfectionism to the healthy pursuit of excellence.
