Thanks for tuning in to this special episode of Intellicast! Today, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are joined by Chief Data Scientist Deb Ploskonka and Vice President Holly Smith of Cambia Information Group, as well as EMI’s Mary Draper to discuss all things data-quality related!

The episode kicks off with Deb, Holly, and Mary each giving their individual backgrounds and discussing how their careers led them to market research. Their passion for data quality can’t be ignored in each of their introductions. As Brian Lamar says in the episode, if people were awarded doctorates for data quality initiatives, there’d be a lot of them in this podcast!

In the next segment of the interview, Deb, Holly, and Mary give dimension to the problem of fraud in market research. They talk about how no studies are immune to fraud and how fraud goes beyond just bots. In fact, they discuss 5 categories of cheaters and how fraud is always evolving. Deb and Holly also share highlights from a paper they wrote titled, “Defeating Endemic Cheating.” This interview also includes a great discussion of best practices and industry initiatives to increase data quality including the Insights Association’s DII, which Brian, Deb, Holly, and Mary are each a part of.

Thanks for tuning in to Intellicast! In this episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian discuss conferences and some news stories from the past few weeks (yes, we know it’s been a while since our last episode!) So, without further ado, let’s jump right in.

The episode kicks off with some feedback we received on our last episode! In it, we had a conversation on the conference in Hilton Head, which was a unique location, but it was expensive, hard to get to, etc. Our listener recommended that maybe we need to go to some second-tier cities (Ex: Charlotte, New Orleans, Nashville, Philadelphia, Cincinnati) for our conferences. The reasoning being that these cities are cheaper, and the airports have less travel hassle/cancellations and are easier to navigate. What do you think? The guys also give an update on the upcoming conferences in the next few months and even some in 2024!

In our first news story, the guys discuss Momentive’s announcement that they will be returning to its original name, SurveyMonkey. As expected, Brian Lamar is practically giddy over this news. In the next news story, Brian and Brian chat about Cint and Publisher’s Clearing House’s partnership to increase access to respondents with their new platform, PCH Consumer Insights. This leads Brian Lamar to a bit of a soapbox rant about how things like this change panels. The next news story follows a similar thread with Kantar selling its specialist healthcare business to M3 Global Research.

After this, the discussion turns to artificial intelligence. The European Union has approved a draft version of the EU’s AI Act which sets out plans to regulate the use of AI technology. The plans will enact bans on many uses of AI and require AI systems to comply with transparency requirements. In the last story, the guys discuss QuetionPro’s acquisition of PathosAI, an AI platform that identifies states and non-stated emotions, which leads to another fired-up rant from Brian Lamar about name changes.

In the first news story, Brian and Brian discuss Forsta and Cint’s partnership. This is a step in the right direction to solve the data quality issues our industry is facing and reduce fraud.

Next up, we touch on the Insights Association’s DII Council and their new website. The site allows people to access the DII Toolkit and the Data Integrity Pledge. A lot of cool stuff is coming from this group, so you’ll want to follow this page.

The final news story is SamplNinja’s introduction of a new mobile app that will improve respondent experience and address survey fraud. This asks the question, is the market research space behind on using apps?

Welcome back to Intellicast! This episode is a much-anticipated recap of the IIeX conference last week. It’s not your average recap though; we’re joined by Mike Herrel of Directions Research! He’s a long time listener and first-time guest so we’re excited to have him!

Before we get into the IIeX recap, Mike gives an overview of Directions’ integration of Seek a few years ago as well as Aimpoint Research. The three brands interact to answer any questions their clients have regarding their business.

Producer Brian and Mike kick off the interview with their overall impressions of the conference. They were both first-time attendees—and have mixed reviews of the unique headphone experience. The guys all agree that the conference is always jam-packed with back-to-back sessions. Many of those sessions surrounded artificial intelligence and how it can be used to assist researchers. Their main takeaway is to think of the relationship with AI as less of a battle and more of a partnership.

The guys round out the interview with a fun debate, a favorite non-conference activity, and some interesting, if not tragic, travel stories. If you weren’t able to attend the conference or just want a refresher of the main takeaways, be sure to tune in!

Welcome back to Intellicast! Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are back for some market research water-cooler talk including the latest industry news and a preview of the IIeX conference this week!

The episode kicks off with some current events. The Insights Associations Annual North Central Fall conference is September 4-6th in Minneapolis. There are several upcoming WIRe events in Chicago, Atlanta, NYC, Cincinnati, and more! Brian Lamar will be a speaker at the Cincinnati event on June 8th. There will also be an Insights Association event in Indiana at Top Golf on August 17th. It sounds like it’s going to be a busy summer for industry outings!

In the second segment, the guys jump into some MRX news. They start with Toluna’s acquisition of MetrixLab and their majority stake in Precision Sample as part of the acquisition. M/A/R/C Research acquired Horowitz Research, a New-York based marketing research firm known for its thought-leadership in the multicultural space.

In the final segment of the episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian give a preview of the upcoming IIeX conference. Producer Brian was named to the Greenbook Future’s List and will be speaking on Thursday at 2:05pm on the Red Stage. He’ll be discussing how to Find your Unique Voice and Dominate the MRX Industry. Brian will also be chairing the Demo Track on Thursday Morning with lots of generative AI demos. Be sure to connect with Brian Peterson while you’re in Austin!

Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a special interview today with Lindsey Bartel of Brandtrust and Andrew DeCilles of EMI! This is Lindsey’s third time on the podcast and we’re so happy to have her on again to discuss some of the research we’ve partnered on surrounding mental health—a great segue into Mental Health Awareness Month!

The interview kicks off with some background into Brandtrust’s relationship with EMI and how these projects got started. It all began with Brandtrust’s work with Narrative Inquiry and a subject we were all passionate about: mental health. As talking about mental health became less stigmatized, we recognized a need for people to talk about it. This interview gives a behind-the-scenes look at the research and methodology.

In the second segment, we discuss some of the key takeaways from the research including reading a real open-end response from the study. This portion of the interview boils down what Brandtrust and EMI have spent hours discussing and analyzing over the past few months. We are going to be diving into this more in the upcoming webinar, Uncovering the Truth: The Power of Narrative Inquiry and Strategic Sample Blending in Mental Health, on May 18th at 12:00 PM EST. For the final segment of the episode, Brian, Lindsey, and Andrew share some highlights from the process. In the second segment, Brian and Brian discuss the latest market research news including the announcement that Big Village has sold its Insights and Agency Business to Blue Mountain Media for $20M and the latest Bellwether report by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising which found that UK market research spending fell by a net 3.2% in Q1 of 2023. The Brians discuss what that might mean for us here in the US.

Brian Lamar has had a busy travel schedule for Q1, so he kicks off the episode by sharing his experience with a few different industry conferences including Quirks, the Pharmaceutical Conference, the upcoming IA Annual Conference, and more! The overview of the IA Annual Conference is a great way to get warmed up for the event if you’re attending. Brian even shares a preview of our speaking session with Chuck Miller of DM2.

In the second segment, Brian and Brian discuss the 5th edition of The Sample Landscape report which launched April 11th. The report has an entirely new look and feel—listeners will get a sneak peek into how the sausage gets made in terms of laying out the research and its evolution. The report is truly a labor of love for everyone at EMI and we’re always looking to make it better, so let us know what you think of it!

The guys then touch on a few different news stories including Escalent’s acquisition of Hall & Partners and C Space from Omnicom. The new combined organization will offer access to a proprietary platform that helps manage brand knowledge with almost 2,000 employees in 20 countries. They also touch on Xperiti’s launch of Vepp which says it will mitigate fraudulent responses in B2B research. Welcome back to Intellicast! In today’s episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are joined by Cindy Neumann of the Insights Association and EMI’s own Mary Draper. This is a great episode to discuss some of the great things going on in our industry, especially the initiatives being led by the Insights Association.

The interview kicks off with a quick chat about Cindy’s background and what led her to market research. Like many researchers, Cindy kind of fell into the market research industry and has spent the majority of her career on the syndicated data side of things. About a year ago, Cindy had the opportunity to join the Insights Association, where she works now.

In the next segment of the interview, Cindy takes some time to discuss the Insights Association DII Council (Data Integrity Initiative Council), a committee dedicated to improving data quality. She shares how and why the DII was created, who is on the council, and some of their current efforts.

This segues into a conversation surrounding the Data Integrity Toolkit, a resource created by the DII for anyone who is interested in learning more about data quality. Cindy shares some of the areas that the toolkit focuses on, and Mary discusses how she uses the toolkit in her role at EMI. We also get an idea of what will be coming with the next release, what the DII is currently working on, and some of their most important initiatives including a partnership with MRS, ESOMAR, and SampleCon.

Welcome back to Season 6 of Intellicast! In today’s episode, the Brians are joined by EMI’s own Andrew DeCilles to discuss the latest market research news and the Quirks Chicago conference that Andrew and Brian Lamar attended last week.

The guys jump right into the recent market research headlines starting with Qualtrics’ $12.5 billion acquisition by Silver Lake. Andrew and the Brians discuss what this might mean for the industry as more tech entrepreneurs start to invest in MRX. This is followed by some ESOMAR news. Joaquim Bretcha has been named the Interim Director General and Ray Poynter has been elected president, replacing Kristin Luck. After that, we share some newly announced partnerships. Sample Ninja has partnered with Research Defender to improve their fraud detection. Additionally, the Insights Association, ESOMAR, SampleCon, and the Market Research Society have partnered on a campaign to address fraud and data quality risk.

Hold on to your hats ‘cause we’re not done yet! In a final pairing of news stories, we discuss PureSpectrum’s completion of a $37 million round of equity funding and an update to the algorithm used for their PureScore respondent scoring system. The news segment of this episode is wrapped up with a look at the Attention Validation Initiative from the Advertising Research Foundation.

In the second half of the episode, Brian Lamar and Andrew give a recap of their experience at Quirks Chicago. They discuss some of their favorite sessions as well as trends and themes that emerged from the conference. Brian was able to bring his dog, Bonnie, to the conference and she even got her own badge!
