Welcome to our first episode of Season 2 of our podcast, Inspiring Living!

My wife, Isabel, joins me today as we take a quick look back on Season 1 and share some thoughts on our upcoming Season 2. Our podcast is about Inspiring Living and in each podcast we share the stories behind the people we live, work, and collaborate with in our daily lives.

Today’s podcast episode features someone special in the Willamette Wine community, being one of the first winemakers in the Ribbon Hill region/sub-AVA, Bruno Corneaux. We first visited their stunning winery Domaine Divio by chance, and boy was it a lucky find as there are a hundred wineries in the area! Pair stunning views with incredible Rose’, Chardonnay, Pino Grigio and Pinot Noirs and friendly staff and we were in wine country heaven!
While wine tasting, we learned about Bruno and his childhood in Burgundy, France and then working in wineries around the world, and then starting Domaine Divio in 2014 . . . we just knew we had to come back and have him as a guest on our podcast! Today, Bruno is the director of winemaking at NW Wine Company in Dundee and owner and winemaker at Domaine Divio Winery in Newberg, Oregon.

In this episode Mark speaks with the passionately loving parent of 9, Maria Hansen-Quine. Can we just say, we were absolutely blown away by Maria & husband Sam’s compassion, strength and deep desire to make the world a more loving and understanding place.

Along with parenting, Maria has always been passionate about diversity. Twelve years ago, while a school counselor in Washington state she created a diversity unit in which she taught regularly for 10+ years. Maria has created two children’s books which are a culmination of this curriculum and her experiences as a school counselor and a mom. “Be Different & Be Kind” tells the courageous story of a character named Mariah and what it really means to be different from the other kids. Things improve for her when the school counselor comes in her class and teaches a new lesson. This book is a great resource to teach children about the beauty of diversity! 

Maria has devoted the past 22 years to working with children, has worked in three different states, six different schools, two group homes, an outpatient therapy children’s programs, homeless shelters, and has provided court mandated therapeutic in-home support to families. 

Maria currently works as a school counselor in a beautiful inner city community in Arizona and her and her husband Sam have nine beautiful and diverse “precious jewels”, seven through adoption and two born biologically. You do not want to miss this moving and motivational episode and check out her book “Being Different and Being Kind”

In this episode, Renee Dee, Founder and Publisher of ICONIC LIFE, sits down with Mark Candelaria over Aperol Spritzes in his office’s new demonstration kitchen to talk all things ICONIC HAUS. They also discuss what it’s like to be the go-to guy for spectacular estates and remodels in the Valley and the changes in design he’s seen since covid-19.

This Podcast episode of Inspiring Living features two amazing individuals and members of our Candelaria Design Team. First, we welcome Architect, Jeffrey Kramer, AIA, who has been a member of our team for nearly 20 years. Over the course of that time Jeff and i have collaborated on a number of amazing projects including a true legacy project, El Chorro in Paradise Valley, AZ.

Jeff Kramer came on board our team in its early beginnings but his addition had such an impact on the growth and level of work our team ultimately produced and has continued to produce due to Jeff setting what we call the Jeff Kramer standard – a standard that has now become the Candelaria Design Jeff Kramer MVP Award.

In this podcast we will delve into Jeff Kramer’s beginnings as a youth in New Jersey to his college days at Tulane University in Louisiana, to eventually ending up here in Arizona. Along the way, without even looking at Jeff’s work, you will come to understand why Jeff established the MVP standard in our company and culture.

Then, we actually present the Jeff Kramer 2020 MVP award to this year’s recipient, Mathew Grove! Mat has been with the firm approximately 5 years and from his time just starting as an intern while completing his studies at the University of Arizona he has become a force and highly respected member of our Candelaria Design Team working on a number of marquis residences.

Carrie Evans is a photographer here in the Valley and Scottsdale-native, specializing in fashion, lifestyle and corporate photography. Her range, charisma and talent have landed her work in a multitude of local and international magazines such as Institute Magazine UK, Phoenix Magazine, Phoenix Home & Garden, Obscurae Magazine, and Veux Magazine in Toronto. 

I met Carrie many years ago on a photo shoot for a “Modern Man” article in Luxe Magazine. Carrie has done many shoots of my partner’s and I for various magazines over the years and I hired her for a very special shoot of my wife Isabel and I while she was going through chemo a few years back (photo on our website’s Podcast Page). 

We discuss her journey graduating from U of A to working at a TV and print Ad Agency in Las Vegas, to moving back to Scottsdale to pursue a photography career. She talks about her travels, some memorable shoots and her determination and unwavering belief in herself and her passion.

This podcast episode features Chef, restaurant owner and friend, Angelo Brunson of Angelo’s Ristorante. I met Angelo during a dinner at his restaurant back in 2004 while up in Idaho working on a luxury log home on Lake Coeur d’ Alene. We were very impressed with this newly opened, authentic Italian restaurant and of course I wanted to meet the chef behind this great food. Over a decade later, I continue to take my friends and family to dine at Angelo’s during our trips to Cd’A, as the food and staff are still as marvelous as ever.

This September, I was in town for a long weekend to visit my middle daughter Bella during her summer job there and of course, we enjoyed a great meal at Angelo’s. In this episode Angelo talks about learning to cook, opening his first restaurant in Seattle, what led him to the small resort town of Cd’A, his faith, his family, his restaurant and the vineyard he shares with the famous winemaker Pasquale from Paso Robles, CA!

This week’s episode couldn’t be more relevant, as we speak with Founder and CEO Jessica Pierce of Career Connectors, a local nonprofit that provides resources for those looking for a new job and for companies having to downsize. Jessica speaks with Mark on networking, how Covid has affected the unemployment rate and unemployment benefits, best practices for finding employment or switching careers and the benefits of volunteering.

Jessica brings a strong background in organizational development techniques, career coaching, DISC behavioral assessment, training and development, pre-employment assessments, outplacement services and hiring, and the two of them tap into all these topics during the podcast. They also discuss the large influx of people moving to Arizona over the past few years and now with the “remote workplace”, and how that has affected our job market and the big industries here that need more workers.

Jessica has spoke at The White House in the Forum on Job Clubs in United States, has been featured in the Arizona Republic, on NBC Channel 12, ABC Channel 15, SimplyHired and multiple other radio and newspaper outlets.

Today’s episode Isabel and I chat with our friends Russell and Erika Dickey. We talk a bit about the state of the world, which segues into their incredible grassroots effort in helping the Navajo Nation battle Covid-19, and how with the help of friends, connections and a passion to make a difference, anyone truly can. Lastly, we end up reminiscing over our past Tours to Italy together in 2014 and Spain in 2016.

Russell earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting, then  attended the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law in Phoenix, graduating in 1987, and became a member of the Arizona bar in 1988. Today, he and his wife are involved in a number of charitable organizations as Co-Founders, Board members, and volunteers. They are a wonderful example of channeling frustrations and issues in the world into positive actions and grassroots fundraising.

Russell earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting, then  attended the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law in Phoenix, graduating in 1987, and became a member of the Arizona bar in 1988.
