Help Your Child Cope with Back-to-School Stress

The back to school season is officially here!

For many families, the shift from summer freedom into structured schedules can feel overwhelming. Early mornings, packing lunches, coordinating carpools, after school activities, and nightly homework routines can pile up quickly. Children may feel anxious about new classrooms, unfamiliar teachers, or making friends, while parents carry the weight of trying to hold everything together.

If you are already feeling the stress, you are not alone. These feelings are completely normal. Transitions are challenging for everyone, and they can easily stir up anxiety in both parents and children. The good news is there are simple, practical ways to move through this season with more calm, confidence, and connection.

Here are five tips to support your child and yourself during the back to school adjustment:

Talk about it. Fears and worries feel heavier when they stay bottled up. Invite your child to share what they are nervous about and listen with empathy. Whether it is concern about making friends, following new rules, or being away from home, showing them that their feelings matter builds trust and helps calm their anxiety.

Review safety rules together. Go over the school’s safety guidelines together so your child feels secure and informed. Revisit your own family’s routines as well, such as how to find help if they need it, or where to meet in an emergency. This creates an extra layer of reassurance.

Focus on the positive. Help your child shift their attention toward the things they can look forward to this year. Ask them what excites them about going back. Maybe it is reuniting with classmates, trying out a sport, or discovering a new subject. Encourage positive self talk and introduce simple calming practices like deep breathing.

Create a predictable routine. Children feel safer when they know what to expect. Reestablish consistent rhythms around mornings, meals, homework, playtime, and bedtime. Include time to connect each day so you can check in on how they are adjusting.

Model calm and confidence. Children pick up on our energy. If you show steadiness and calm in how you approach this season, they will feel more secure. And if you notice your own anxiety rising, know that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
