SHRM’s All Things Work podcast continues to provide coverage of how the world of work is responding to the pandemic. 

This time last year, talent shortages were on the minds HR and recruiting professionals everywhere, but the onset of COVID-19 shifted employers’ focus at many organizations from talent acquisition to a survivalist mindset of just trying to stay open and adapt to the new complications of operating during a pandemic. After months of recalibrating to a new normal, employers are again looking toward their future success and returning to the question of, “How do I get the best people to work for my organization?” 

To discuss recruiting and retaining talent in a post-COVID world is Jim Bitterle.

With recreational and medical use of marijuana now legal in over 30 states, pot use has emerged as a complicated topic that raises many thorny questions for both employers and employees: Should employers still test for it? If so, what are the circumstances that they should? What sorts of accommodations should employers make for what sorts of employees?

The large-scale shift to remote work in response to COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the experience of how employees interact with one another, especially as teams. The absence of employees’ proximity also eliminates both the physical cues and informal, non-work related interactions between team members that are so important in producing a shared sense of connection and cohesion.

As a result, organizations are having to rethink what they can do to create that experience of interpersonal connectivity when team members can’t be in the same place.

On this week’s episode of SHRM’s All Things Work podcast, we’re discussing the very complex issue of guns in the workplace. Much of the complexity is rooted in the fact that each state is responsible for enacting its own laws about guns and the places gun owners are allowed to bring them, including the workplace and company parking lots. What that means for employers is that they’re bound by the laws of the state where they operate, which results in a complex legal picture at a time when employers are striving to keep their employees safe.

Joining us to discuss guns in the workplace is Jake Charles. Jake is a Lecturing Fellow and Executive Director of the Center for Firearms Law at Duke University. He also writes and teaches on the Second Amendment and gun laws.
