Fear grips all of us in some form and if we haven’t developed skills to help us cope with our fears, they will hold us back from our full potential. Today’s podcast features Interior Designer and my wife, Isabel Dellinger Candelaria, who was just awarded Master of the Southwest by Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine. She will share what it was like to get the news that she was being given this award, but then the fact she would have to give an acceptance speech and face her phobia of public speaking.

Again, we all experience fear to some degree including now as we collectively fear the effects of the coronavirus, the markets, the economy, frankly there is always something to fear but how we deal with it makes the difference in how we enjoy our lives.

Today we speak with one of the strongest, most caring people we know, Founder of Generation Justice, Darcy Olsen. In 2011, Darcy found herself with a foster baby in her arms and a mission: to put an end to the bureaucratic failures, violence, and deaths she’d seen children suffer in our nation’s broken child protection system. Today, Darcy has adopted all four of her children from foster care, has testified before Congress, written for The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and has published a book “The Right to Try” along with countless appearances on public affair shows.

The story she shares in this episode about her life’s journey and work is heartbreaking and heartwarming . . . but please give it a listen to better understand what is happening all around us in this city and cities all over America. We must use our strengths to help others, especially those who cannot help themselves.

This episode features a highly motivated man, my friend and local home builder, Jim Steg. His journey began building homes with his father in the Midwest before they moved to AZ in 1979. Jim’s early adult years were spent working for a nationally-recognized corporate company where he was responsible for managing over 250 employees, becoming proficient in cost planning, organizational, motivational and accountability skills. He mastered the art of setting goals; creating the action plan to achieve those goals, and executing the action plan, which brought him great success in the organization and all in all aspects of Jim’s life as we will hear in this episode.

Today, Jim owns and operates his a full-service custom home company, StegCustomHomes and is the brains and founder of 11 Summits: Attitude with Advocacy. He shares his story of turning his life around, completely transforming his physical and mental states and becoming an advocate for positive change. A few of his athletic accomplishments include:

Truly a man that inspires so many of us, Jimmy Walker, founder and figurehead of Celebrity Fight Night which he started along with his good friend, Charles Barkley in 1994. As the event grew, Jimmy Walker collaborated and worked side by side with the great Muhammad Ali for nearly 20 years before he passed and has raised millions of dollars for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center and the Banner Neurological Institute. This year’s event in Phoenix, AZ has been postponed to October 3, 2020, tickets and info here.

Jimmy is very active at St. Vincent DePaul in downtown Phoenix brining in guest speakers including myself with his “Never Give Up” lunch every week.

Jimmy is a man of great faith, loves his family and especially his beautiful wife of 52 years, Nancy, and his seven grandchildren.

His insurance business is beyond amazing representing renowned and recognized stars, sports figures and celebrities. His newest venture is Celebrity Fight Night Italy with singer Andrea Bocelli, now celebrating its 5th year.

Accomplishments and accolades aside, Jimmy Walker is a good friend and someone I greatly admire and someone that inspires me and hopefully will inspire you!

Having already accomplished his dream as a professional cyclist in his early 20’s, he had to make “the toughest and easiest decision of my life to stop cycling” and stay in one place long enough to start a new career and life with his girlfriend who lived in Tucson, AZ. Just before his final race in 2007, Austin obtained his real estate license, proposed to his girlfriend, now wife of 10 years, and began a new chapter. Spending the first few years learning the ropes of real estate in an incredibly challenging market, it was the determination, grit, and work ethic learned from his cycling days that helped him succeed.

Utilizing his real estate knowledge along and an entrepreneurial desire to improve residential property, Austin began flipping houses with some friends. What started as a casual venture soon grew into the creation of Rafterhouse in 2013, which has progressed from small ‘fix and flip’ cosmetic projects to large scale multi-million dollar new construction custom home builds. Receiving local, State, and National recognition,
including two pilot television episodes with HGTV, Rafterhouse is considered a leader in Phoenix’s custom home building and interior design community. Rafterhouse and most of their projects are located in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix, and in addition

Today’s guest is the multi-talented Tracey Martin whose accolades include Immersive Transformational life coach, Author, Fashion Designer, Sustainable Living Strategist and Social Entrepreneur! For over twenty years, she has coached hundreds of people on their journeys of growth, doing so from the belief that everything is connected and thus, her coaching integrates mind, body and spirit. 

In 2017, Tracey developed a coaching curriculum titled the Transformation Declaration, which has evolved into a seminar – one for adults and one for teens – called the Transformation Tour. We dive into what this is all about, why her coaching and curriculum are so effective, and tips for all of us to live our best lives, especially during these challenging times. 

Tracey’s many collaborations include being a sustainable living panelist at Arizona State University, a mentor at Gateway Community College, and a guest speaker for Inspired Media 360 and In the Green Room media.

Today’s guest is Pooja Babbrah, a strategy and policy consultant in the healthcare industry, and a wonderful client and friend of Isabel’s and I. Her focus is on healthcare technology and the importance of using technology to help those involved in a patient’s care including doctors, nurses, clinical and administrative staff and the patients themselves. We discuss many different important topics during this episode.

Pooja will shed some light on how COVID-19 has impacted her work and her efforts to ensure healthcare information is shared quickly, accurately and securely. We’ll also discuss how technology is changing the way we receive healthcare and how those in the field are adapting and benefiting from all the new innovations.

Pooja is on the Board of Trustees for a national healthcare standards organization and an advisory board member for Water1st International, a Seattle based non-profit, for which she travelled to Ethiopia and Honduras to help in communities struggling to get fresh water. She shares her takeaways from those trips, how she balances all of her roles, and how she’s staying busy and positive during this pandemic.

Today’s guest is one of my all-time icons, Mark Tarbell of Tarbell’s Restaurant! You all know how much I love to cook, but this guy is at the top of the top when it comes to this profession and passion we both share. Mark will talk about his culinary beginnings in Amsterdam and Paris, share what it was like to compete on and win Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and achieving his dream of opening his own restaurant in 1994. 

Hundreds of accolades later, the Tarbell’s team continues to serve contemporary dishes and classic comfort food in the elegant, art-filled space. Being in the restaurant business right now as we all know is as tough as it gets and we will get into this during the podcast. However, this guy is still open and cooking every day, so I encourage all of you within driving distance to support not only Tarbell’s, but all of your favorite dining establishments in your neighborhood.

Our guest on this episode is Arizona interior designer Anita Lang, founder of IMI Design. Mark and Anita have known each other for nearly 20 years as they have worked on a number of amazing homes together, including one they are just breaking ground on. They discuss much more than work and design however, delving into spirituality, being a single mother and business owner, travel, and sustainability in design.
