We all have our own unique identity, sometimes multiple identities. In our society we often judge who and what we see, hear, and read in the news.

Whether we identify as old or young, rich, poor or middle class, liberal or conservative, Muslim or Christian . . . we are innately aware that we get judged and we judge very often because of our individual and collective identities. How can we look at this differently?

From Dragnet to Live PD and Body Cam we’ve come a long way. Now sprinkle in a sneeze of Coronavirus contagion. What does this mean for the Law Enforcement officials running toward the danger or the infected? People are afraid and buying guns and we see the rise of vigilantes. People in power are facing life and death situations more frequently. Who gets masks, who gets ventilators?

After a 3 month hiatus. We’re back, masked up, and quarantined. It’s been a minute, but the migrations haven’t stopped. Work is web-conferencing. In the fall will school be in person or online? This guy named George Floyd died. Statues are falling and we quote Tony Soprano’s view on Christopher Columbus. Even sex isn’t the same!

As of Aug 4th 2020, one hundred fifty seven thousand, seven hundred twenty-nine people have died from COVID-19 in the US. Yet, some still refuse to wear a mask. “Anti-maskers” have become a subculture as people cling to traditions of individualism or claim it’s their “Right” in a free country. Which begs the question: What is an American? Maybe this is a Flashpoint or a 5th Wave we weren’t expecting. Maybe power has something to do with it.

The recent explosion on Aug 4 2020 in Beirut Lebanon is just another example of how a crisis will be “covered” by a crowdsourced media. The chain of information seems to go from personal account to general public to news source to a digital rebroadcast of a compilation of single sourced feeds. It’s an endless cycle.

Who is fact checking the reports? Where is Journalism in today’s communication industry? And how has this barrage of data changed us as Americans? We take a closer look.

I’ll have a drop of entropy in a bowl of thermodynamics! Is this the right podcast or just an example of order and disorder? What is the natural order of things? We think the Temptations got it right with Ball of Confusion. Order is based in our past, but disorder seems to always happen in the now and the threat of it is in the future. We end season 2 “What is an American?” with a re-examination of Vice Admiral Jerome Adam’s quote: “This is our Pearl Harbor …” We are at war, but the enemy isn’t so clearly defined. Are we experiencing American impotence? Are we living in a war zone? Events of the week in politics, protests and pandemic response seem to say — yes! But as the seasons change will we as a country have the resilience to change also and survive the upcoming Winter a stronger and ‘more perfect union’? Time will tell.
