Do you have a Show Notes Strategy for Your Podcast?

When planning your podcast, one of the most overlooked strategic decisions is the format of your show notes. Notes often get put on the backburner compared to the more pressing needs of hitting your recording deadlines, but the right notes can dramatically increase the value you get out of your podcast.

There is no right approach, only better or worse ones for your goals. The most effective format depends on what you want your podcast to accomplish and how much time and budget you are prepared to invest.

Common Show Notes Formats

Podcasters typically choose from a few different levels of detail:

Minimal Notes

A concise summary of one or two sentences describing the episode.

Description and Key Points

A short overview of the discussion, accompanied by bullet points highlighting major takeaways, links to referenced resources, and guest information.

Blog-Style Notes

A more comprehensive style with multiple paragraphs, or styled as an article with headings, subheadings, images, and structured content that expands on the episode topic.

Bonus: Transcripts

Full or edited transcripts of each episode, often published as a searchable written resource. These will usually be in addition to another style of podcast, and are valuable from an accessability standpoint as well.

Each option has benefits, and the best one the simplest and fastest to produce format that still supports the strategic objectives of your show.

Matching Show Notes to Business Goals

Relationship Building and Executive Networking

If your podcast is designed to strengthen relationships with clients, referral partners, or industry peers, include at least a substantive episode summary and a dedicated section about your guest.

The Description and Key Points format works particularly well here. It allows you to highlight your guest’s insights, provide links to their organization, and share any relevant offers or resources. It demonstrates professionalism and appreciation which go a long way towards nurturing the relationship.

Search Visibility and Discoverability

For organizations focused on organic search and content marketing, Blog-Style Notes offer the greatest value.

Search engines prioritize content they can read and understand. Detailed written content with clear headings and optimized structure gives each episode a stronger opportunity to rank for relevant topics.

For interview-based shows, this can become resource-intensive. Many organizations address this by pairing interview episodes with shorter solo episodes or commentary segments that are easier to transform into search-optimized articles and other content.

Sales Enablement and Lead Nurturing

When a podcast is intended to educate and nurture prospects to filer them in or out of your services, Blog-Style Notes are the way to go.

In this context, the format matters less than the accessibility of the information – we just want people to be getting the information. Some audience members prefer listening, while others are more likely to engage with written content. By presenting your ideas in multiple formats, you increase the chances that prospects will actually use it.

That said, thoughtfully prepared summaries and bullet points can still deliver strong results when you’re watching your production costs.

What About Minimal Notes?

Minimal show notes require the least effort, but they also provide the fewest strategic benefits. They may be appropriate when budgets are limited or when speed is more important than search performance.

Even with very brief notes, podcasts can still build authority and deepen relationships through audio and video alone – it just takes more time.

Choose Based on Your Strategy

Your show notes should reflect the role your podcast plays in your broader marketing and business development strategy.

Before selecting a format, think about what your ultimate reason for podcsating is: What do we want the show to accomplish?

Once the objective is clear, the appropriate approach becomes much easier to determine. The best show notes are not necessarily the longest or most elaborate. They are the ones that efficiently support the outcomes your organization is trying to achieve.
