My name is Michelle, I am a 12-year post stroke survivor who fell in love with how exercise made me feel and later saw improvements in my stroke affected arm from exercising. I became a certified personal trainer, an exercise therapist and corrective exercise specialist to help others be able to use exercise, improve physically with increased strength, endurance, and range of motion as well as to improve mood and fight depression.

I have a YouTube channel and make videos that not only document my journey and process to see gains in my own recovery but to help other stroke survivors with exercise ideas to see gains in their own recovery. I focus on information related to recovery that will help all survivors see physical improvements and better mental wellbeing. I have specialized training in training programs for stroke survivors as well as other neurological disorders, such as Parkinsons.

I also have a channel focused on using exercise as mental therapy to improve mental health as well as therapy for the body to create better and more fluid movements

I run the Stroke Sweat Squad Facebook group where we have a positive atmosphere and motivate and encourage each other. We have a weekly zoom call to talk about the pressing topics each stroke survivor experiences.

I am a US Naval Academy graduate, submariner, shipbuilder, business owner, and received a research PhD late in life at the Heller School at Brandeis University. I graduated in 2006 and went to Vassar for a semester, then back to the Heller School as assistant and then associate dean in career services and admissions until I had my stroke and aphasia in 2011. I lost my language (from aphasia) and could not read, write or speak well, but I got better!

Edward Cassenti is a husband, grandfather and father. He has been a work-out enthusiast and has maintained a healthy lifestyle throughout his entire life. He broke the world record for the bench press when he was just 16 years old. He adores playing with his 4-year-old granddaughter and playing the guitar and singing. At the age of 71 years, he continues to work full-time as the Business Development Manager for an IT Consulting Company. He has had two strokes in his life; the first at the age of 36 years , and the second at the age of 64 years. The second stroke damaged 90% of his cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance and coordination.

Lisa is a single mother of a 4-year-old daughter and she is a breast cancer thriver. She is a Special Educator, International Best-Selling Author, Speaker, and the Co-Founder of The Breast Connection. Lisa and her mom, Ed's wife, Judi, were the primary caretakers after Ed had the most recent stroke. Lisa will be speaking from the perspective of a caregiver.

I had a very cool 11 year career of tricking out cars, you would catch me at all kinds of car shows (still do, not as much though. I crawled my way up that company ladder from a simple noob to running my own store! I had built a custom lowrider along the way which was my baby. I was the big dog and moving up fast. Then suddenly it came to a life changing halt!

On 10/07/2012, it was Sunday at about 11:30

I woke up 6 weeks later from an induced coma and a large scar and the back of my head, with memories of some very twisted and bizarre dreams, all I'm saying is that hospitals have the best drugs!

My trip to the ER was around the time of the election debate (Obama's 2nd term) and my aunt had been in my room for weeks watching the news, Anderson Cooper and the actual debates. Without going into detail, I'll just say that all this political stuff had been absorbed by my subconscious and during my coma these vivid dreams were a bit political (did I say hospitals have the best drugs?).

After I first woke from the coma, I was in a haze for the first 2-3 weeks while the drugs wore off. I didn't know where I was and thought everyone was out to get me. Doctors and nurses were not safe from my assault of sign language. It turns out that it's really common for those with a brain injury to lash out at everyone. Good to know I wasn't the only one.

Maggie Whittum is a filmmaker, actor, producer, writer, public speaker, disability advocate and stroke survivor. She speaks at conferences, universities, and hospitals about her story of illness and identity. Maggie is creating 'The Great Now What', a documentary film about her experience with stroke, disability, loss and resilience.

Maggie Whittum is re-emerging into life as an artist, after having survived a massive brainstem stroke in 2014 at age 33. She performs with Phamaly Theatre Company in Denver, CO, which exclusively casts actors with disabilities. Previous theatre directing and producing credits include All in the Timing, The Zoo Story, Into the Woods and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Maggie has directed and performed in Scotland, Colorado, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Beijing and throughout Canada. In 2006 she wrote, directed and produced "Love the Radio Edit", an original one-act comedy, to a nearly sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2007 she founded the improvisational comedy troupe Seoul City Improv in Seoul, South Korea. I had just turned 50 the day before my stroke. Until the stroke I worked as a corporate accountant for the prior 25 years And I was an avid motorcycle rider and trail hiker in Georgia. Where I still live. Due to impairments from the stroke I no longer ride or drive but I know I will again one day it’s Been 4 years now since the stroke things I’ve lost most of the use of my left arm. I can move it during no fine motor control and a lost of my reading ability I get lost on the page to easily.

Donna O’Donnell Figurski, wife, mother, and granny, is a teacher, playwright, actor, director, picture-book reviewer, radio host for the Brain Injury Radio Network, photographer, jewelry crafter, and writer.

Donna is an advocate for brain injury and writes about various topics of brain injury. She is the author of an award-winning memoir, PRISONERS WITHOUT BARS: A CAREGIVER’S TALE, which details her journey through the brain injury maze with her husband, David, who had a brain injury in 2005. Donna is also published in anthologies and several online and print magazines.

In addition, Donna has created and writes for her award-winning blog, Surviving Traumatic Brain Injury (survivingtraumaticbraininjury.com), and loves to be invited to speak on brain injury and caregiving.
