Patel grew up in Chappaqua, New York, and graduated from the New York University College of Dentistry in 2011 before completing a general practice residency at the Nassau University Medical Center. Dr. Patel is a general dentist in private practice with her father, endodontist Dr. Rohit Z. Patel, in Westchester County, New York. She chaired the New York State Dental Association New Dentist Committee and served as the new dentist representative on the American Dental Association Council on Dental Benefit Plans for the 2020-21 term. She is the director of Member Benefits for the American Association of Women Dentists, and is on the board of the NYU College of Dentistry Alumni Association. She is also among the recipients of the 2021 ADA 10 Under 10 Awards.

    Tim was born and raised in Vancouver, WA. Knowing he wanted to be in healthcare, Tim eventually landed on dentistry since it allowed for autonomy, lifestyle opportunities, and a blend of art and science. During dental school, Dr Tim found out pediatric dentistry is a specialty and was hooked! Combining the dentistry with real estate investing, Tim has been able to open 6 specialty clinics in five years without private equity involvement and intends to continue to do so. His group’s purpose is “Every Child Gets A Smile” and they mean it, seeing kids from all backgrounds and on all insurance types. Their growth is a reflection of meeting that great need in their region of care. Outside of dentistry, Tim is a husband, a father of six children (including a set of twins), a reader of business and leadership books, a triathlete, a man of faith and a believer in people and their potential for greatness. His pediatric dentistry group, now a multi-doctor owned group named Acorn Dentistry for Kids, is unique in that they have banned the words manager and management from their vocabulary, and instead focus on leadership, coaching, teamwork and opportunity. They hope to be an inspiration for other groups looking to grow while still maintaining the integrity of their core values and staying true to their purpose.

    Episode 042: Winning the Student Debt Battle: Lessons from a Military Dentist 

    A 2020 graduate of Marquette University School of Dentistry, Patrick Campbell is currently a practicing dentist for the US Navy. Most recently, he has been on the “green-side” treating service members of the Marine Corps. Before dental school, he started to look at alternative career paths for his dental career (and of course ways to pay for school) which is when he found the Navy’s Health Professions Scholarship Program. After a long application process, he was commissioned as a Dental officer in the US Navy and attended Officer Development School in the summer of 2020. In his free time, he enjoys producing engaging, light-hearted, easily digestible dental content for “The Eval”- a bi-weekly newsletter.

    Episode 040: In Business and In Health: Lessons from Married Co-Practice Owners

    Dr. Matt’s interest in helping people live healthier, more confident lives led him to pursue a career in orthodontics. After completing a three-year orthodontic residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he co-founded Larson Orthodontics with his wife, Dr. Katie Larson. Over the last 10 years, they have purposefully guided the practice into the thriving office it is today, recently opening a new state-of-the-art facility in Altoona, WI. In addition to being a board-certified orthodontist, he is an associate clinical professor at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches orthodontic treatment planning and biomechanics to orthodontic residents. He also serves on the AAO Committee on Technology (CTECH) and the AAO Committee on Conferences (CCON).  He has assisted in abstracting orthodontic journal articles for Practical Reviews in Orthodontics, editing the most recent edition of Contemporary Orthodontics (a prominent orthodontic textbook), and published a textbook chapter, multiple articles, and posters on his orthodontic research.

    Episode 039: Maintaining a Positive Office Culture

    Diana’s story started in Cebu, Philippines. As a child, she loved working with her hands, and loved helping people. She studied dental medicine at Cebu Doctors’ University in Cebu, and later obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree with distinction from Indiana University. In recognition of her academic excellence, she was inducted into the Theta chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society in 2012. She is also a recipient of muerous awards, such as: Seattle Met Top Dentist, America’s Best Dentist, top Doctor, top Dentist, Expertise. 

     

    Her journey into practice ownership arose from her desire to provide a better quality of care for her patients, a better work environment and culture for her team, and an overall better quality of life for everyone. She focuses on creating systems and making the office as efficient as possible with patient experience in mind. For years since her start up, her office has grown rapidly, thriving, and is now accepting patients via word-of-mouth referrals, as well as attracting top-talent seeking opportunities in the practice.

    Episode 031: Financial Wisdom from a Bookkeeping Perspective

     Annette Woods is a 1983 graduate of the University of Michigan Dental Hygiene School. She worked for 35+ years as a dental hygienist in many different types of dental practices from general dentistry to periodontics. Her experience also included working for HMO, PPO and Private pay offices. She became familiar with the different ways these offices were run. Twenty-five of these years were spent practicing dental hygiene in South Florida and becoming very familiar with the inner workings that made successful dental offices. Annette later moved to North Florida, where she also owned and helped run several businesses with her husband Steve, along with still practicing Dental hygiene. This led to a need for acquiring bookkeeping skills. In January of 2016, Annette’s husband passed away and she made the decision to change her life and have a more flexible career in order to spend time with her teenage son and be at all his school events. She however, did not want to waste her years of knowledge in the dental industry and her passion for helping people. So, she then went on to acquire more advanced training in the virtual bookkeeping world, which included mastering many of today's technologies available. She has become very active in bookkeeping mastermind groups and is one of the founding members in the Digital Bookkeeping Association. Annette has also worked virtually for a dental consulting firm learning more about dental specific bookkeeping. Becoming a Quickbooks ProAdvisor, using professional bookkeeping training and her many years of dental experience she formed her own bookkeeping firm, Bookkeeping Aesthetics, LLC. Her firm has put together the latest and most accurate systems to help dentists understand their practice better and build a healthy and more prosperous practice.

    Episode 028- The Promethean Spark

    Dr. Mary Jane Hanlon has a long and varied background in the field of dentistry. She realized her dream in 1997 of becoming a dentist when she graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She started a practice from scratch in Lexington, MA where she would work for the next fifteen years. Having had some challenges along the way with her dental practice from a business perspective, she realized she wanted a more formal education in the principles of business. This led her to pursue an MBA from Suffolk University in 2012. In April of 2014, she began her new role as Assistant Dean of Predoctoral Clinical Education where her major responsibility was to revamp the clinical environment making it more patient centered, increasing the efficiency of the students interactions with both patients and faculty and improving the overall financial picture of the undergraduate clinics. In January of 2016, she became Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs overseeing all of the undergraduate and postgraduate clinical operations for the school. Currently, she is President of the Massachusetts Dental Society and the fourth female president in June of 2020. Following her tenure in dental education, she joined the business side of dentistry as the Senior Vice President of North America for Promethean Dental Systems, an educational and technology company whose mission is to evolve dental education at all phases of the professional’s life.

    Dr. Bill Dischinger maintains private practices in Lake Oswego and Canby, Oregon in the United States. He has lectured and taught all over the world and is recognized as an expert on many subjects within the specialty of orthodontics. He is a KOL for both Ormco and Propel Orthodontics. He is an adjunct professor at the University of the Pacific Department of Orthodontics in San Francisco, California. Dr. Dischinger has published numerous articles and written a book on a variety of subjects within the specialty of orthodontics. Dr. Dischinger completed his dental training at Oregon Health Sciences University in 1997 and his orthodontic residency at Tufts University in Boston in 1999. He and his wife, Kari Lynn have been married for over 25 years and have four sons.

    Dr. Baker is a general dentist who grew up near Atlanta, Georgia, and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia. He then completed his dental school training at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. While in school, he prioritized learning about practice management and the business side of dentistry, since he enjoyed it and realized practice ownership was his best path towards financial security. Upon graduation, he completed a residency program at the VA Medical Center in Birmingham, AL. Dr. Baker purchased his dental office right out of residency from a retiring dentist in Virginia and is in his second year of ownership. He is passionate about getting out of debt and achieving financial freedom while maintaining a work/life balance.

    Episode 005- Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About DSOs

    Stan Kinder of Everything DSO has more than 42 years of experience in the health care field in both the public and private sectors in management and senior management positions with involvement in dentistry reaching as far back as 1981. He has been an independent practice management consultant and practice broker and most recently within the DSO industry as a senior executive responsible for growing the organization through practice affiliations. Over the course of his career, he has been involved directly in practice transactions exceeding $200 million and indirectly involved in another $200 million in funded purchases as a consultant or broker assisting dentists in transitioning their ownership, and as a buyer on behalf of DSO entities. He has experience in virtually every aspect of transitioning dental ownership over the past two decades.

    He hold an undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Boston University, graduating with high honors.
