Troy Korsgaden

In the business world, an inflection point happens at a critical moment when the situation calls for new thinking and a different strategy. Troy Korsgaden—a highly sought-after insurance and financial services consultant, speaker, and the author of seven books—believes this is that moment for the insurance and financial industry. Previous assumptions about the way we do business are no longer accurate. His warning is that if we don’t see the need to change—and change now—many of us will lose customers…and perhaps lose our businesses.

This book will guide you to adapt your insurance or financial services agency to reach and serve customers in the ways they want to do business. Troy Korsgaden shares a blueprint for a new business model to set your firm up for success in today’s rapidly changing environment.

Take a hard look at your role, firm, or carrier as it is today, and ask yourself, “Where am I now?” and “How did I get here?” Take a rigorously honest approach when looking at your business. What have you done right, and what could have been done better? Are you poised for the future? What areas could you improve? In what areas do you thrive? When is the last time you retooled any of your procedures or workflows? Many professionals show up every day without a real plan, and their schedules are dictated by the brushfires that flare up during the day. They don’t have a defined and purposeful schedule to guide them. Don’t let that be you!

Start today, setting up your firm for success. Create an action plan to retool everyone and everything within your agency or firm. The bottom line is to have a seamless ecosystem at the firm level and/or the carrier level. Think of it like a digital experience. You enter through the main hub, and when you are offered a different product, most of the time you feel you’ve left the hub. It feels odd and uncomfortable because the process has suddenly become complicated. Our task is to create a reality for our customers in which they never feel they’ve left our hub.

To ride the new wave in our culture and our industry, you need to create a network that blends excellent customer experience, a wide array of options in your offerings, and the creation of expertise partners to whom you can refer your customers who need products and services you don’t currently offer.

David A. Paterson

“I have had this desire my whole life to prove people wrong, to show them I could do things they didn’t think I could do.”—David Paterson

A title that hits you between the eyes is second only to a Governor put in office by a prostitution scandal. Scandals aside, David Paterson overcame severe disability and racial prejudice to become a state senator, lieutenant governor, and—unexpectedly—governor of New York.

Paterson is well known for his remarkable vision. In a rising climate of denial and with fiscal crisis looming, Paterson appeared—seemingly from the wilderness—to sound the alarm about the impending crisis after being in service for only a few months. But his leadership extends well beyond reducing a 21.3-billion-dollar budget deficit during the worst economic downturn in recent history. From standing in protest outside Amazon against Kindle accessibility for the blind, to advocating the overthrow of a corrupt Trinidadian government, he made his mark during his three-year tenure. He made procedural changes that resulted in no state budget being late since his departure from office. He fought for same-sex marriage and against disability discrimination. When he appeared on an episode of Saturday Night Live, he even quipped, “You guys spent so much time talking about my blindness that I forgot I was black.”

Paterson was the first and only blind governor—other than a man who held the title for eleven days in 1975—and the fourth person of African descent to hold the office of governor in American history. Paterson may also be the only governor in history to have been arrested outside the governor’s office prior to his service. You will want to read about that one.

His candid admissions, even while serving as governor, are refreshing in this era where the truth and public servants are rarely mentioned in the same sentence.

This book is at times hilarious, shocking, heartfelt, and then—when you least expect it—soulful, passionate, irreverent, and extraordinary. This is a self-help book encapsulated from the memories of one who continues to help himself through his service to others, the credo of public life.

Since leaving office, the former governor has flourished as a talk show host, consultant to industry, Chair of the NY State Democratic Party, Director of Investments with the Moldaver Paterson Lee Group at Stifel Investment Bank, and now Senior Vice President & Special Advisor to the President of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation.

What’s next for David Paterson? The governor stated in one of his lighter moments in the journey of Black, Blind and In Charge: “I may take a run at the Presidency, or, better still, the Vice Presidency and another scandal.”

Keith Ferrazzi

As the founder and CEO of Ferrazzi Greenlight, Keith Ferrazzi has spent over twenty years working with major global organizations to help them achieve their goals and reach new levels of success. He has been called upon by these companies to see them through our modern era of rapid technological advancement and explosive change, but as Ferrazzi explains in LEADING WITHOUT AUTHORITY: How the New Power of Co-Elevation Can Break Down Silos, Transform Teams, and Reinvent Collaboration (Currency; May 26, 2020), the main challenge facing organizations today comes down to the fundamental way in which we work, both as individuals and together with our colleagues. In a world that now more than ever requires agility, innovation, and efficiency, we’re becoming more and more bogged down in organizational silos that paralyze and wreak havoc on our work and relationships. Ferrazzi argues we are long overdue for change and the key is a methodology Ferrazzi developed and coined: co-elevation.

Following in the tradition of his #1 New York Times bestsellers, Who’s Got Your Back and Never Eat Alone, LEADING WITHOUT AUTHORITY offers Ferrazzi’s expert guide to achieving co-elevation. He shows that authority needs no official title or position, just an individual taking the initiative to seize opportunity. Once we have adopted the leadership mantle for ourselves, we can begin the process of co-elevation, “a mission-driven approach to collaborative problem-solving through fluid partnerships and self-organizing teams.” Through his prescriptive approach, Ferrazzi offers real-world solutions for creating true teammates in our colleagues and building the kinds of quality relationships that will help us achieve our goals and lead to greater success. And as we adapt to our new work world, co-elevation is the operating system for successful remote teams we all desperately need. When employees of all levels are committed to “going higher together,” we unlock the potential for more productivity, deeper engagement, and mutual accountability that can withstand the greatest external pressures.

Once mastered, the lessons of LEADING WITHOUT AUTHORITY and co-elevation go well beyond the scope of business and the workplace. The more we can overcome divisiveness and build mutually beneficial relationships in all areas of our lives, the more we are able to cultivate a spirit of generosity and commitment. LEADING WITHOUT AUTHORITY offers new rules for a new work world, but it also offers a new model for simply living in our modern world.

Leadership is one of the world’s oldest professions. There are countless resources for one to learn about leadership and do in-depth study. In this book, my goal is not to provide a scholarly tome, but rather to provide emerging leaders simple messages for guidance and success. I do this through 140 simple messages that have helped me navigate life.

Why am I providing 140 messages, some have asked? Why not use traditional numbers, like five, ten, or 100? The answer is very simple. We are living at a time when Twitter and its 140-character limitation (now 280) is being used by leaders in all areas of life and at all levels of organizations. Some leaders are exemplary in their use of Twitter, and others less than exemplary. My goal is to leverage the zeitgeist we are living in to show how by using the limited characters allowed by Twitter, leaders can communicate strong messages that make a positive impact on people’s lives. For that reason, this actionable leadership journal contains 140 Twitter-length messages written as a guide for emerging leaders on living, learning, and developing themselves and others on their journey to success.

Additionally, I have become convinced of the power of well-crafted short messages for another reason. I was a Forbes contributor for a year. As a member of the Forbes Coaches Council during that year, I contributed to thirty question-and-answer columns. The answers to the Q&As I submitted to Forbes were required to be 400 characters or fewer. This is slightly longer than Twitter’s new 280-character limit. Some of the columns I appeared in were read by as few as 2,000 people. My most popular column, however, was read by more than 30,000 people. This clearly shows that people found value in our succinct messages and shared them with others. Hence, I believe there is value in the messages contained in this book designed to be an actionable leadership journal.

Cracking the Curiosity Code: The Key to Unlocking Human Potential:  Curiosity is one of the most analyzed, discussed, and written about topics in the study of human behavior. We have learned that it is innate from birth, as illustrated by the phrase, childlike curiosity. We have learned that it is essential to the survival of the entire animal kingdom. We have learned that the most successful leaders and entrepreneurs attribute their success to sustaining their childlike curiosity, while many people’s sense of curiosity tends to wane or deteriorate as they age. For the longest time, we attributed that diminished state of curiosity to the aging process itself. But studies have shown that is not the case. Why do we lose our childlike curiosity? What are the causes; and what are the consequences? Most importantly, how do we get it back? That is the essence of this book. Complete with the latest research, interviews with top leaders and entrepreneurs, and analysis, the author presents her case that, our fears, our assumptions, technology, and our environment, are the major factors that contribute to our diminished curiosity. Those causes, which she has reduced to the acronym, F. A. T. E., are examined, with the means for the reader to measure each, and take the necessary action to regain their childlike curiosity. Learn How to Get it Back – Scientific studies have demonstrated that success in the workplace and living as a healthy human being are heavily dependent on curiosity. But many people tend to lose their curiosity. Cracking the Curiosity Code helps the reader determine what causes their lack of curiosity, and how to get it back.

Leo Bottary

Most of us don’t seek advice or reach out to others for help very easily. In part, it’s because we’re conditioned to see life as an individual endeavor rather than a team sport. Or because we believe that asking for help makes us look weak or incapable. We regard self-help as by-yourself-help. News flash: no one in the history of the world has ever achieved any level of happiness or success totally by themselves.

In his 1976 book The Long Run Solution, Joe Henderson suggested that becoming truly accomplished at running (or at anything) doesn’t typically require us to perform superhuman feats. In fact, success is frequently realized by those who simply do the things anyone can do that most of us never will. In What Anyone Can Do, with the help of Leo Bottary Year of the Peer podcasts guests (and playful illustrations by Ryan Foland), you’ll discover that if you surround yourself with the right people, you’ll do the things anyone can do far more often. And when you do that, you and the people around you will realize more of what you want out of business and life. It’s that simple.
