As I look back on my 30’s I realized that my pendulum would swing in one extreme direction without settling in the middle. I gave everything to my work and team, I gave to my family, ran myself crazy trying to keep my house spotless, only focused on the gym and nothing else, volunteer for everything in my community. Only to fill empty and lost inside. So today I am sharing a few stories from my life and give you the top 3 lessons I have learned over the years, which allowed me to Read The Chapter of ME instead of skipping over the best parts of my life…

Forgiveness has been a hot topic these days especially with the direction our society is headed. We often hope we can watch “Karma” happen to the people who have wronged us and allow those thoughts to consume our days. At the end of the day we have to learn to forgive and let go! Today, I have my son with me to talk about social media safety from both perspectives. Some of the things that he has already heard from some of his young friends’ girls/boys about being approached. Why I don’t allow him to have any other social media accounts except for Tick Tock. Why he follows who he follows, how he protects himself on his live video games when he is talking to others he does not know.Times have changed and these sick humans no longer need to troll the streets for their young prey. They seek safety in their homes behind a screen posing as a young teenage boy or girl. Social media has helped mask traditional cues that alert an individual to a potentially dangerous person.The best way to keep our kids safe in education and plan nosey parenting. Look we want our kids to have their privacy, but they are not old enough to since danger because of their innocence. We have to walk a fine line as parents, but at the end of the day, it is our job to protect them from the people who mean them harm.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, at some point in your life someone is going to place a label on you. Whether that label is true or not, we can get trapped by what that means, and that label can place inside our head a negative image of who we are.Today’s podcast is short but a lesson we all need to learn. Eliminating the labels that people put on me through school and how even today I still struggle in allowing those labels to haunt my thoughts. So with everyone working on their 2020 Goals lets start with that self-talk and take the labels others have put on us and put on that cape and fly!

Many times in our personal and professional lives we will be prompted to try to fit ourselves into someone else’s box. Everyone does it, and at some point, we all come to the realization that we are adapting the real us to fit what someone else needs.I remember the first day walking in as the Texas Director of High School Programs for DeVry University in the fall of 2007. I was excited and nervous all at the same time! Not to mention I was a new mom of a 6-month-old baby boy. I wanted to do a good job and support my team to set them up for success. I remember learning that a female leader very high up within the organization felt I was the wrong choice for the role. She did not think I was tough enough to lead a team of individuals from all walks of life and some much older than me.Here is a story of 2 different leaders and how both of them influenced my actions but only one of them set me on a path of true servant leadership for the rest of my career. As a leader, your words matter along with what you do for your team to set them up for success.

I truly had mixed feelings about the Super Bowl Halftime show for many reasons. As a woman in her 40’s, I was impressed with how Shakira and Jennifer Lopez owned that stage. It is refreshing to see that women in their 40’s and 50’s are still seen as beautiful and sexy. On the other side, I have to think of how many young girls feel they have to dance, dress and look like that to get the attention or “like” they so desperately want. With the rise of teens sexting and sending provocative pictures which to them increases the probability of “hooking up”. We have to find that happy medium in celebrating women and allowing them to be confident no matter their age, weight, shape, height or nationality. We have the data to prove that engaged employees increase production. Executives will admit that an engaged employee base increases retention and creates a culture that attracts good talent. Why do we still see a large percentage of employees not engaged and doing the bare minimum? Well, maybe because their leaders are doing the bare minimum when it comes to filling their brownie box. This episode is for my leaders who want to understand what it takes to leade a group of engaged employees and why retaining employees is key to sustaining your culture. It is time to bake some brownies leaders and do more than giving them a paycheck and a place to work!
