Autonomy, meaning and fun: How ShopRunner CTO Greg Ball keeps his engineering team booming

ShopRunner CTO Greg Ball is a bit of a product person. But don’t take our word for it.

“Building new products is what gets me out of bed every day,” he said.

Ball’s love of building products is a significant reason why he joined ShopRunner, a fast-growing subscription service that offers free, two-day shipping and returns at more than 140 online stores. Before joining the company, Ball was VP of technology at Orbitz — a company where size can occasionally stymie the product development process.

“At ShopRunner, we can move faster and make decisions more quickly,” said Ball. “We can literally decide something in the morning and then start working on it in the afternoon.”

That quick turnaround time is welcomed, as ShopRunner has a multitude of projects in the works. We spoke to Ball to learn more about what his team is working on, his approach to leadership and what he looks for when hiring.

You were at Orbitz prior to joining ShopRunner. What drew you to the company?

ShopRunner CEO Sam Yagan is fantastic. You can’t ask for a more proven entrepreneur or better leader to work with. I also liked where the business was at in its life cycle. ShopRunner is healthy and established, but Sam’s observation is that there’s still room to innovate and build new products that will take us to the next level. Building new products is what gets me out of bed every day. This really was a unique opportunity to join a healthy business with a lot of new projects in the pipeline.

There are people who want to help you become the company you’re going to be, and then there are people who only want to join you once you’re there. We try to only hire the former.

Jessica Mulholland Miguel Gamiño, New York City’s chief technology officer, is leaving for the private sector after a year and a half in the role. For about seven years now, Gamiño has been leading city technology departments. “We’ve accomplished a lot, and I’m now kind of setting up to pursue a new venture or a new chapter I guess — a continuation of the work, but from a different perspective,” he said. Can you talk about those tools or the projects your team is currently working on? We’re making a bunch of investments in data science and engineering. I try to give my team some autonomy and make sure they understand why they’re building what they’re building so it has some meaning. There are people who want to help you become the company you’re going to be, and then there are people who only want to join you once you’re there. I love hiring multidisciplinary people because they bring a variety of strengths to their role, which helps us have better conversations and build better products.
The city of St. Louis announced two recent staffing additions: its first-ever chief technology officer, and a new chief information officer. City of St. Louis The city of St. Louis is digging a little deeper on tech – hiring its first-ever chief technology officer and changing its overall approach to information technology. The new CTO is Robert Gaskill-Clemons, a former Washington state enterprise technology architect from the Office of the Chief Information Officer, Mayor Lyda Krewson announced on March 13. His first official day was March 5, Emily Thenhaus, the city's media and engagement strategist, told Government Technology. Krewson also named 23-year city hall staffer Cindy Riordan as the new chief information officer. “As of recently we have not had a CIO. We have had a director of IT. Among his responsibilities, Gaskill-Clemons will explore ways the city can use technology to improve the lives of its citizens. Riordan, who was sworn in on Dec. 28, will lead the city’s Information Technology Services Agency, which was established by ordinance in 2003 and leads the planning, development and implementation of tech and information services for the city, residents and businesses. With the two on board, officials will ensure that St. Louis “is making the best use of 21st century technology for our 21st century city,” Krewson said in a statement.
The UK government is guilty of a “dereliction of duty” for leaving big technology firms unregulated, London mayor Sadiq Khan will warn, saying that no firm or industry is “above local rules”. Speaking on Monday at the South by South West technology conference in Austin, Texas - the first British politician to do so - Khan will criticise politicians for failing to ensure technological progress benefits all, saying that regulation is clearly out of date. Khan will slam governments for “sitting on their hands while the tech revolution has happened around them”, according to a preview of his speech. “There’s been a dereliction of duty on the part of politicians and policymakers to ensure that the rapid growth in technology is utilised and steered in a direction that benefits us all.” Tim Berners-Lee: we must regulate tech firms to prevent 'weaponised' web Read more Khan is expected to read out some of the racist, abusive and illegal tweets that he has received since becoming mayor, urging Facebook, Twitter and others, to do more to curb hate speech online or face stiff regulation. With the skills and resources these companies have at their disposal – I believe it’s possible to go further and faster.” If Facebook, Twitter and other platforms do not embrace a “stronger duty of care” they will face tough new regulation such as Germany’s new laws that levy hefty fines for failure to remove hate speech, fake news and illegal material fast enough, Khan will warn. Ameesh Paleja is departing as CEO of Lionsgate-backed Atom Tickets, the social-movie ticketing startup he co-founded, to join Lionsgate’s Starz as chief technology officer. Paleja served as CEO of Atom Tickets since 2014. Separately, on Thursday, Atom Tickets announced $60 million in funding led by Fidelity, with participation from Lionsgate, Disney, and 20th Century Fox. Hirsch called Paleja “a visionary and world-class technologist whose substantial experience with digital distribution platforms will deepen our brands’ connection with consumers and provide audiences the highest-quality entertainment possible. Prior to co-founding Atom Tickets, Paleja began his career at Microsoft in 2001, then moved to in 2003 where he spent nearly 12 years. At Amazon, Paleja helped launch Prime Instant Video, Amazon’s Appstore, Cloud Drive, and the Kindle product line. He then became the founding employee of Amazon’s R&D facilities in Southern California, where he oversaw more than 550 employees. Paleja, commenting on his move to Starz, said: “Connecting customers to the content they’ll love has been a longtime passion of mine. Starz has some incredible storytellers and I am excited to help connect their stories to millions of new customers around the world.” Paleja earned a bachelor’s of science degree in computer science from UC San Diego. He currently holds 24 patents in digital video and related fields.
Twitter has appointed distinguished engineer Parag Agrawal, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B), as its Chief Technology Officer, according to an update at the microblogging site. He takes the position most recently held by Adam Messinger, who left in late 2016, CNBC reported late on Thursday. The appointment of Agrawal, who completed his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 2011, was announced internally in October 2017. Agrawal joined Twitter in October 2011 as an ads engineer, and he most recently held the title of Distinguished Software Engineer. Before joining Twitter, he did research internships at AT&T, Microsoft, and Yahoo. His contributions at Twitter include leading efforts to increase the relevance of tweets in Twitter users’ timelines using Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI also helps Twitter in preventing abuse on the social network. “In his capacity as CTO, he’s focused on scaling a cohesive machine learning and AI approach to our consumer and revenue product and infrastructure teams,” a Twitter spokesman told CNBC. Twitter also announced this week that it intends to hire a Director of Social Science in an attempt to “increase the collective health, openness, and civility of public conversation” on its platform. CHENNAI: Flipkart is an AI (artificial intelligence) first company and it looks at every problem it faces through the AI lens and try to solve it, said CTO of the e-commerce company Ravi Garikipati on Saturday. Garikipati was speaking at the inaugural CTO Talk programme in Chennai. He spoke about how Flipkart is using AI and machine learning for various objectives, including driving personalisation for customers. CTO Talk, an initiative by SaaS company OrangeScape, is intended to be a knowledge-sharing platform consisting of a monthly series of curated sessions by and for CTOs. “We envision CTO Talk to become a platform for open dialogue and deep-learning where CTOs from well-known Indian companies such as Flipkart, Big Basket, Zoho, Freshdesk and PayTM come to share their successes and challenges with peers in the industry,” said Suresh Sambandam, founder and CEO of OrangeScape. Facebook and Twitter may be forced to reveal detailed information about how and why users were targeted for political advertising, the information commissioner Elizabeth Denham has suggested. Speaking to the digital, culture, media and sport (DCMS) select committee, which is holding an inquiry into fake news, Denham said that transparency in political campaigning was crucial. And I think that’s where people are asking for more transparency,” Denham added. What is a Twitter bot? Strictly defined, a Twitter bot is any automated account on the social network. The core of the debate is the accusation that a number of political tweets were sent by "Russian bots", with the intention of subverting political debate, or simply creating chaos generally. Instead, accounts like @SouthLoneStar, which pretended to be a Texan right-winger, were probably run by individuals paid 45-65,000 rubles a month to sow discord in Western politics. “It involves more than 30 organisations: social media platforms as well as data analytics companies like Cambridge Analytica; it involves political campaigns and parties.” The investigation will have two main outcomes: the creation of a wide-ranging report that will recommend changes to the regulation of data use in politics, and potential enforcement action against parties and data processors who have broken data protection laws as they currently stand.
