“You need to get your mind right to LEAD right!”

~BP~

The mind is a tricky thing.  It affects everything.  No matter how much we think we can ignore it, we can’t.  A bad mindset impacts our relationships, business dealings, quality of interactions, sales and ultimately your bottom line.  The mind plays an integral part in how much success you have.   Now more than ever, with so many distractions around us, it can be difficult to keep our mind in peak performance.   Simply stated –  You need to get your mind right to lead right.

World class athletes and bodybuilders constantly watch what they eat to maximize their performance and remain in top shape.   As leaders, we must do the same with our mind. There are way too many distractions pulling at us in all different directions, from social media, television, advertising, media, our phones and just plain old noise pollution.  All these distractions make it difficult to keep the mindset at its optimum, positive driven state.

To keep the mind in peak performance requires our body to be at its best.  That means we have to try to get sufficient rest/sleep and maintain a healthy diet and exercise.  What is also needed is what I call The BLENDER of POSITIVITY!

The Blender of Positivity is how we feed our mind to make sure we are in a positive state and ready to take on the world. It begins about an hour or so before you go to sleep, and starts up again immediately after you wake up for the first 30 minutes to an hour.

Power Down…

About 30 minutes to an hour before you go to bed, you must power down.  That means turn off the electronics, the TV, the radio and yes, this includes your phone (The phone! Not my phone! Oh, the horror!).  Work will be there in the morning, I guarantee it!  You have to let your mind relax in order to get the best rest.  If you want to read a book, make sure it’s something positive and up lifting.  Need to listen to music? Make sure it’s soothing and without lyrics (think of a spa setting, check out calm.com).  Create an environment for your mind to relax and you will be much better for it in the morning.

Just as important, if not more so, is when you wake up!  Let’s be honest, waking up to an alarm clock sucks.  However, for most, if not all of you reading this, it’s the most efficient way. There are other ways to waking up. It requires knowing your body’s natural circadian rhythm.  A great article at sleep.org goes in detail on how to achieve that.  There are other ways as well. But if we are being honest, it’s always going to be the alarm clock that is most efficient.

Fill the Blender…

You just woke up!  Time to feed your mind with your blender of positivity!  First, what not to do.  DO NOT read emails, look at your phone, put on the TV, listen to the news or read the newspaper.  Avoid electronics and all things negative. Give your mind a chance to wake up without being bombarded by all the distractions I named above. Instead… meditate, exercise, take a nice shower, open your window, breathe the air, listen to nature, make love, brew your coffee or tea, make a healthy breakfast, read an inspiring book.

Feeding your mind with positive influence the moments you first wake up allows your mind to “warm up” efficiently.  Starting your day with your blender of positivity guarantees that when the pressure is turned up later in the day, you will be more effective in handling situations in a calm and efficient manner.

For those that can’t avoid their phone when they awake, put a positive quote on your phones home screen that resonates with you. One that makes you think and inspires you to positive action before you open any emails or check social media. If that is too much of a hassle, leave a post-it on your phone with the same quote.  Either way, don’t let your phone be the first mental food you take in.

They say the mind is a terrible thing to waste.  I agree.  I also say it’s a terrible waste if we don’t feed our mind properly to maximize its performance.  After all, we can only go as far as the mind will take us. The question is…  How far do you want to go?
