Market Timing and Staging – It Matters

Market Timing and Staging – It Matters 150 150 Chris Rabalais

Human beings are very interesting creatures. That’s an understatement, right?

You don’t see a dog waltzing past a discarded cheeseburger one day, deciding to eat it the next time and then, once again ignoring it on the third pass. However, people will do exactly that. Let me explain…

Do you buy summer clothes in winter? Why not? A shirt is a shirt.

Do you eat ice cream on a ski lift? Why not? Does it taste bad?

To more modern concerns, why didn’t the tablet take off with the Apple Newton?

The answer to all of these questions is the market timing and/or staging were off. Now, I won’t claim any special gift for figuring these things out. If anyone does claim to have these superpowers, be extremely skeptical. I have learned a few things from trial and error that I hope will be helpful.

Be as Certain as You Can of Your Core Conclusions

In our case, the core concept is that sports as an asset class will create jobs and encourage self-directed financial education. The sub-headline to that is that the global size of the sports industry along with access to all forms of content via mobile smartphones makes the proposition viable and almost without peer in scale.

Watch Everything

In today’s market driven by social media and all sorts of new consumer behavior, keeping an eye on trends is more important than ever. This means looking beyond just your field to the general marketplace including matters of politics and faith. Everything is connected together more today than at any point in human history. There are good apps out there like Blinkist which will let you digest the greatest thought leaders of the day in audio (listen in the car) or short digests on your phone. Yes, these things cost a little but how much is your time worth? A single good idea can spawn a billion-dollar business.

Know When to Act

If your core conclusions are rational and you have your eye on the ball, the market timing signals will start to show. Depending on the scale of what you are seeking to accomplish, it can take some time for all the stars to align. This is where the irreplaceable element of persistence kicks in.

The future of sports and finance will be on display this year at The Hero Club Capital Summit in San Francisco on June 10-12, 2019. I hope to see you there.
